What kind of gas mileage are you getting with the chevy vortec 6.0 V8 when towing ? Need a new tow truck my 8.1 2001 chevy only gets 6mpg.

I'd be cautious with that 6.0L and a Montana. The new models have increase their capacity, but older model trucks, even the duallies, only had a 16,000 GCWR.

doing some research,I found that a 6.0 with 4:10 gears only towed up to 12500. Is that enough for your situation?

I had a Vortec V8 6.0L in my last truck with a 3.73 rear end. Towed a 28 foot fifth wheel. The truck was a four wheel drive. I got around 8 miles to the gallon. Don't look to gain much MPG by switching to the 6.0.

That won't work with a 16k GCWR. Even a dually, if maxed out at 11,400...leaves only 4,600# for trailer weight.

I to think you will not like the the 6.0 to the best of my knowledge they do not come with the Allison in my opinion the Allison and cubic inches are the key to the Gasser's ability to pull a Montana they no longer put the 8.1 in a pickup so you have to buy used and that is not easy find.

I think that 8.1 will give you a lot of years of service-many miles.

To verify Ken's previous comment, the 8.1 is no longer offered. Too bad, as its a performer bar none. I'd only trade it for a diesel, but that's not likely to happen. Mine's a 2001 with only 25k miles. Might last me a few more years if I take care of it.

Ours is a 2002 with 32,000 we are going to celebrate her 10th birthday in June
