Truck Scam

I finally got burned. I found a 2002 F350 drw on craigs with 102K miles. It had 4x4 and Lariat package. Guy wanted $13,500. Sounded good to me. Truck was 500 miles away in Knoxville. We talked several times on phone and emails. Wanted $500 to hold it until I could come up. Told me to go to Walmart and put the money on a moneypac card and send the card numbers to him and he could cash it. If I did not like truck my money would be refunded. Once he got the money I never heard from him again. Turns out several more people was buying it also. Guess I learned an expensive lesson. Thought I was too smart to get taken. O Well..... proved wrong.

Sorry to hear that. I would report the incident to Wal-mart and the authorities.

Sorry for your loss. Nobody has $500 to throw away. I am just glad your loss wasn't greater.

Several others have contacted me to say they also put up a deposit to hold the truck. No telling how many times he sold it. I guess some people just don't want to eard their money by working for it. More than one has turned him into the police. Hope they can do something about him.

I hate to think that this is what we have come to in our society. Like you stated, there are those who just do not have the integrity to earn their money.......they just take it from others who worked hard to get it. Sorry for your troubles but theis could happen to any of us.

Can you get the plate number off the vehicle?? Maybe the police can trace it back the owner, if the plate is assigned to that vehicle..... Hope they get the guy and you get your money back or some kind of revenge!!!

That has to hurt. That said, Craigslist is full of scams. I see lots of ads that list vehicles with prices way too low for the advertised vehicle. I even emailed about one, just for the heck of it, and toyed with the individual a bit. I suppose it was one of the Nigerian scam artists. Anyway, I ended up telling him I would come look at the vehicle, and put cash in his hand when he forked over a TX title. End of story.

This scam is a little different though. I would think this one might be pretty easy to trace. Good luck; hope you get the money back.

SlickWillie is correct...many many scams on Craig's list. I had an ad for my 5th wheel hitch. Guy sent me a $2,500 check (I was asking $350), wanted me to pull out my $350, another $50 for my trouble, then send the remaining $2,100 to a guy in another state. Clearly a scam...bank thought so too, and wanted the check and a copy of the email the guy sent me. Don't know what, if anything, happened.

This guy sounded so real. Older fellow with southern accent. Talked about an hour on the phone. Talked about kids, work, and normal conversation. I never could see any tags or vin numbers from the pictures.

I have talked to another guy who paid his deposit the day after I did. Another guy I was able to save him from paying deposit by listing a scam warning on the Knoxville craigslist. They guy is still trying to get more. Got my coworker to call and trying to get him to send deposit also.

I filed a police report but don't know if it will stop the guy. Probably just get new phone and change trucks or cities.
