Air Conditioning

I have a 3710FL and I am having a hard time getting the air conditioners to cool down my 5er. Any advice?

Must be a newer montana...make sure you give the year as it does make a difference...as does the color of your unit. If it has lots of dark colors...good luck, you are in three ac territory. Any cool air will flow out into the underbelly if you haven't blocked off the vents built into the steps up to the bedroom. Likewise cool air will flow into the furnace floor vents and to the outside. Windows will be almost same temp as outside, so that heat is coming in. That's the generic stuff to tell you. John

Go to Repairs and Service and look back about two days. There was a big discussion on ACs. You will probably find what you are looking for. I don't think you will like what you find.

It's a 2016. What do you mean by the color of my unit? Asks how do I block the vents in the stairs?

As in does it have body paint (maroon / black / brown) and just remove the vent under the stairs and put a piece of cardboard or paneling behind it for the summer. One big thing to look for is inside your return vents in the ceiling. Remove the grills and with a flashlight and mirror look back towards the A/C for duct collapse. If the duct is smashed down a bit some owners have put lengths of PVC up in there to open the duct back up. Horizontal installation of PVC is hollow so it lets most of the air on thru.

there is a big vent in the stairs, where cold air escapes. Cold air is denser , and sinks.
Park in shadier spots. I have a 3950 , with 2 ACs, darker color, they have trouble in this high heat and humidity, During the day, I can get the unit down to about 74, at night, it cools right down nice when the sun is not beating directly on the unit

We use pieces of black foam board behind the grates under the stairs. In the summer I replace the floor vents with ones that close (Lowes). The vents have insulation pillows in them and my skylight in the bathroom is dark tinted. We have slide toppers to keep the sun off the slide roofs and window awnings on windows we don't have covers on. We spend the summer in central Kansas and winters in the west so we deal with high heat all the time so we go all out.

You can also go to any of the big name hardware stores and purchase rolls of foil covered bubblewrap. Cut pieces of it to fit the windows and they will reflect the sun and insulate the unit also. I purchased snap-on screens that go on the outside of the unit. They are black and actually reflect the heat of the sun because they have silver threads throughout that absorb the heat of the sun and reflect it back out. Both of these will darken the inside of the unit but it will make it cooler. We also have a couple of oscillating fans if we need them but they usually stay in the box they came in. The floor vents that close are also helpful because of they don't let hot air come in from the belly as easily.

The bottom line is, depending on where you are located in the summer, you won't be able to keep the inside of your Montana at 70 degrees like you would your sticknbricks.

From postings I have read on other forums, cooling problems seem to be common on the front living plans, and not just Montana.

Set your bedroom zone about 10 degrees cooler then the living room, this will help prevent it from shutting off and you will benefit from both AC units as they are ducted together. Then open the dump valve on the kitchen/living room AC. that will get the cold air into the area faster. you will still have cold air coming out all the vents due to the bedroom AC.

She indicated a 2016, likely has dual whisper air which if correct means no dump valve on either AC.

bad99ram ... very interesting ... can you post a photo of either air. The ducted returns eliminated the need for the ceiling part of the A/C's that incorporated the dump because that was the return air source. Curiosity has the best of me. Thanks

Pulled this photo off of the Keystone site. Looks like those two vents in the corners of the ceiling are the returns for the A/C.

Bob ... can't see your photo, but the whisper quiet A/C's I've seen or worked on no longer have a grill in the center of the ceiling, but have 4 return grills towards the side walls (2 in living area / 2 in bedroom) that have their own ducting. That's why I would like to see bad99ram's ceiling shot.

Sorry about that. Got the photo fixed. The photo is of a 3710FL, and shows the return vents.

Just returned from four days in Memphis area. Both units set at 75 and fans on high and was comfortable during the day. First day was 96 and low 90's from then on. Now, we did have shade until noon. Of course, saying this will jinx me on next trip!
