Emergency Exit Windows

Dumb question: Can these windows be opened for ventilation or will they fall off? Mine are the new style, frameless windows. I have not had the courage to try opening one.

Be brave and give it a try. We use ours for ventilation frequently. I try to be careful if the seal seems tight - I will go outside and carefully help them "unstick" rather than force the window using the handle. But the emergency exit seems to provide better ventilation than the normal side windows.

We use ours for ventilation quite often. But...I put a small paper wedge in the opening handle if it's windy, because the wind can cause the window to move and the handle can come loose letting the window slam shut. The only thing holding the window open is the handle resting on 1/16" shelf.

Ok thanks. Now a second question: How do these windows function as an emergency exit? Do you just push harder and the window opens wide or does it come off?

It would be nice if Keystone would provide a little info on stuff like this.

I don't know for sure if the window will come off, but it appears to be hinged where it will open wide for escape. On mine, the lever with the red handle will push through the slot to the outside, allowing the window to swing wide open. If I had to get out, unlatch the handle and a swift kick or push and the window would be gone.

A number of years ago Mack the fire guy stated that we should try our exit windows to make sure they worked correctly. The next fall I asked at the Fall Rally if it was ok to try the Exit windows. The Keystone Tech speaking at the Rally said "If it was me, I wouldn't do it". Now that was also the old framed windows.

I use mine for ventilation. No worries. The bedroom window has a long handle, so am a little cautious with that one if it blowing so it does not get caught with a gust. I like the op idea of wedging something in there and will try it.

I had the upstairs bedroom window get caught by a gust of wind and it blew it up and off. Lucky glass didn’t break and was able to drill out the metal rivets and reattach with larger rivets. Now I use a rubber coated metal twist deal to hold it in place. If wind comes up much I just shut it. Was a pain but could have been worse.

My bedroom window blew all the way open one time. So I drilled a hole in the end of the handle and put in a large paperclip so it won't go thru the slot all the way. Now I don't worry about anymore.

I forgot and left mine open while traveling. Oops! After 70 MPH winds for a few hours, not pretty. Bet I won’t do that again.

Sounds like a good plan … Until you want out fast. Although, a paper clip will give way quickly if you need it too. Great idea.

We've had to pull screens to get the handle fed back thru the slot a couple times, thanks to wind. I would like to figure out a way to use them for ventilation with them being secure from flopping in the wind.
