73 and uprooting - into a 2014 375FLF

Washington State became too expensive (and crazy politics) for us to enjoy our normal standard of living. So we sold our home, bought 10 acres in Central Texas (Ag exempt land) and plan to build something. In the meantime, we bought a 2014 Montana Mountaineer 375FLF from the original owner. 3 days after setup, the 15,000btu AC quit blowing cold air. With 103 degree days, it becomes priority Number One. Getting it serviced or replaced would take weeks (called many places), so we opted to install a mini-split (since we don’t plan on moving the unit). Anyone ever done that? Installer is on his way - hoping to cool off tonight! Not many places on this rig to install the indoor fixture. Have to figure that out. Will be reading Archives to learn about maintenance, upgrades and how to operate things we have. Thanks to everyone who participates in these forums. Looking forward to engaging when I can offer anything.

Welcome to the forum Richard and welcome to Central Texas. Sorry you are getting a rough introduction to these summers. I am about an hour southeast of you in Granger and we are a cool 102* presently but the day is still young! I think there are lots of folks on this forum that have "mini-split envy" for our RVs (when compared to our roof-top units). I have seen threads on the subject like the one Foldbak linked to and it seems to be a good solution. Let us know how it turns out.

Howdy and welcome from far northeast Texas! Not one bit cooler up here and this part of the Piney Woods is naturally humid. Hope you and your installer had nothing but great luck getting your mini split system sorted out and installed. Please share your outcome with the good folks here. We are glad to welcome you to the Lone Star state. Good luck and happy camping.

375FLF updated with Mini-Split

The mini-split has been installed for a couple days. Today the outside temp hit 106 degree. The inside was a comfy 74. Best thing about it is how quiet it is - you cannot hear it running even when right next to it. The bedroom AC works great but boy-howdy! When it comes on, everyone knows it! We placed the indoor unit just above the desk area. If I ever want to move the RV, I can use my vacuum gauges and a tank to split the lines, evacuate the Freon and put the heat pump in the side storage. For us this has worked out.

Welcome to MOC, I'm very glad you got some relief from the heat. It's been a brutal summer and unfortunately not over yet.

Do you happen to know what size mini-split system you had installed?

Welcome to MOC.
We don’t have a mini split in our camper but we do heat and cool our home with them. I think, read know you will be pleased with a mini split. We had geothermal before the mini split. The mini split is much better quieter and more efficient. I think you are going to love it.

We installed a 12,000BTU cooler and integrated heater. It’s an AUX brand.

I'm glad you guys are cool now. This really speaks to the (in)efficiency of the RV units. For trailers the size of yours they normally come with somewhere between 2.4 and 3.75 tons of AC and you're doing it with just 1 ton in 100 degree temperatures.

Our mini split will go down to -13 and heat 600 square feet with ease with a one ton unit. Some of the newer units will heat down to -20 with a SEER rating of over 30. That’s efficiency.

Pic of mini/split - outside

This is what the mini-split looks from the outside. Although I’m not going to do it, it would be interesting to see if the outside unit could simply be stored while transporting the unit.

RV manufactured to update their technology. This is just too good to not incorporate it.

In 2015, we installed a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat system in our home. It was touted as being 95% efficient down to -12 degrees. We did not need an alternate backup system … and discovered our 9,000 watt generator could power the whole house (except for the oven, dryer, induction cooktop and steam room). We suffered very little during power outages.
