Basement storage tips & ideas

Newbie looking for photo's, ideas, do's and dont's on how to set up that storage basement for functionality and ease of use. I know we all carry different stuff but nothing like tapping into a little experience to save time and anguish.

there are quite a few good ideas on storage here. have you tried the search feature? It may bring up some stuff. also I am sure you will get some good responses. I can't help as we are not at that point yet

Joe sending you an email! Also you might want to give us what type of rig you have! It helps a lot if we know which basement you have for storage! Racerjoe has a good idea also. Just click on the SEARCH engine on the top of the page and key in Basement storage and see what you come up with on different threads that have been posted here already. There are some really good ideas out there and some pretty good pictures to go along with them too.

Here is my recent design.

It is 46X48 inches wide and 16 inches high. It was originally assembled, then cut on the side and reassembled inside the basement, using screws and no glue so it could be easily disassembled if necessary.
The wire shelves on top were mounted with pilisters to the front wall.
Items below the storage platform are items that are not often used and difficult to stack items on top.
The platform only covers half of the basement.

Like you pointed out, we all have different equipment and store it to best serve our needs, however there is one thing that may be of interest to you. At times we all need a good ladder to do whatever. A few years ago on our Alaska trip we camped next to a couple from Canada. He had purchased a ladder that folds into a 5 inch X 5 inch package and either 6 or 7 feet long depending on which one you have.

From another source it was recommended to purchase a 6 inch X 6 inch plastic fence corner post from Lowe's. I mounted the fence post to the underside of the floor joists. You can insert the ladder into the fence post. It is quick and handy when you need to get the ladder out for use. I drilled a 1/4 inch hole on each end (on opposing sides) and inserted a 7 inch bolt to prevent the ladder from sliding out while I am going down the road. I secured the bolt with a 1/4-20 wing nut and a fender washer.

Camping world carries the ladder.

Swanny, thanks for sharing. I felt like I was in my garage. That front storage is great and really liked the interior cupboard mods as well. I' will be using some of your ideas for sure.

Great use of the space Don. Looks like you had a plan and executed well. What's in the box-tube on the ceiling and where might a guy find the drawers?

The tube is a 6x6 inch pvc fence post that holds a 6' collapseable ladder from CW. The drawer is from MOR/Ryde. They have numerous drawers in difference sizes available. It is a real backsaver too!

Just wondering about your basement mods. What size Mor/Ryde slide did you use? I know this must be mounted to the floor but is there anything under the floor I should be carefull about?

I guess I'll step in and voice the minimalist approach. Here is a picture of what we do. The blue, black and red rolling totes came from Walmart. The black one and the large tote next to it hold trailer parts (hoses, wires etc.), the blue holds my extra stuff and the red holds Joyce's extra stuff. Tables along one wall, drying rack and other stuff along the other wall. Four Dewalt toolboxes in the front (two were removed for the picture). Lawn chairs ride on top of the boxes. Hi Don,
The Mor/Ryde slide was 39"W X 90"L. Got mine through Makarios RV, P/N CTG60-3990W. You do have to mount it to the floor and shim it up with wood in order to get over the lip of the door opening to slide in and out. You will have to be careful screwing it to the floor. It looks like my black and gray tanks are under the basement floor and I assumed they are all the way up against the underside of the floor. I made sure the lag bolts I used did not extend below the flooring. Didn't want to penetrate a tank! I can't remember what length I used, but it was pretty simple to calculate.

Prices are $150 cheaper now than when I got mine a year ago. Shipping is a killer though.

Can you please tell me what you used to shim up the slide and how long of a lag did you use?
Did you remove the covering under the frame to expose the placement of the tanks?
