Oregon Campgrounds

Coming up through Oregon the first part of June en route to Seattle. Haven't decided on Rt. 101 or I-5 for traveling up through Oregon yet. Any suggestions on route or good full service campgrounds? We have completed reservations for all legs of this trip from Illinois to Seattle except this one. Thanks in advance.

I did Rt 101 and recommend it for a leisurely trip. If you need to get there NOW then probably I5, however I have not traveled I5 yet.
I stayed at the Mill Casino RV Park in Coos Bay/North Bend, OR. I also recommend Tillamook area visit the Cheese factory and the Tillamook Air Museum.

I hope this helps. Safe travels.

John is absolutely correct - Highway 101 along the coast if you're in no hurry - just beautiful. I-5 is just a long stretch of highway - the valley is nice, but nothing compared to doing 101.

I say 101. We stayed at Harbor Vista Park in Florence which is 3 miles north of town. Cost is $25 for full hookups at rates a 10 in my book. We used this part as point to take the truck only to explore about 60 miles up and down the coast. I believe we stayed here about 5 days and 5 days at the Port of Newport RV park In Newport which is another 10. Then a little farther up the coast is Fort Stevens State Park which is another great spot to stay for a few days.

You don't say where you are starting from, but an often used bypass if you are in a hurry is using Hwy 97 to the East to go around I-5 through the mountains. Hwy 97 starts in Weed, CA then goes northeast around the mountain route of I-5, then use Oregon's SH58 to cut back over to I-5 at Eugene. I drove this bypass all the time and it was way better than towing I-5's southern Oregon mountain route.

If you aren't in a hurry the 101 is supposed to be gorgeous, but slow going. I haven't been on it, but I've been on I-5 (yuck) and Hwy 97 (yay) in southern Oregon many times. I was hauling trailers and under a time schedule most times. I am not familiar with any camp grounds in those areas.

We took 6 weeks to get from just north of San Francisco to Seaside Oregon. 101 all the way. 5 have not been there, but, I just cannot see how ANYTHING could be more gorgeous that 101. I am still blogging about it and it was almost a year ago. We did the move 35 to 60 miles, find a campground, wander around for several days. This way we did not miss any of the turnouts with the fabulous views that Tana would not fit in. We had wonderful food, views, views, and MORE VIEWS!!

I would do it that way again in a heartbeat.

Just blogged about Patrick's Point State Park near Trinidad California. TO DIE FOR VIEWS!!

Any and all of the Oregon State Parks! We spent the month of July, 2012 wandering up the coast. It was awesome. Make some reservations though. Summer is really busy along the coast.

For a beautiful smaller park with amazing views, I would highly recommend Seal Rock RV Cove on 101 between Waldport and Newport. Be sure to ask for an ocean view. 101 is by far the best route if you have time. There are a lot of tight curves North of Coos Bay but very doable with a big rig. We did a two week tour and it was tone of the best trips we have made so far.

I can only ditto much of what has been said but would add Sea and Sand in Depoe Bay if you take 101, and Phoenix RV park in Salem if you take I-5. We travel 101 from Calif to Port Angeles in Wa frequently, and there are numerous excellent full hook up parks along the way, too many to go Into detail here. I would certainly call ahead as far as possible if you want an ocean view, as those sites book up fast.

The best kept secret on the Ore.& Wash. coasts are the Elk Lodges, some even have their own private RV Parks at a much lower rate.

X2 on Seal Rocks Cove and Sea and Sand in Oregon. Up in Washington about 40 miles North Of Portland along I5 is the Columbia River FRONT RV near Woodland. Right along the Columbia, a beautiful little park withing spitting distance of the big ships on the river. Site 76 has its own private lawn that allows you total unobstructed view of the river traffic. Just spent three nights there.

If you stay in the Winchester Bay area pm me and I'll find you. I work at the Salmon Harbor RV Park. It's a beautiful area and great fishing and crabbing. Just got back from DD restaurant clam chowder in a bread ball,to die for. Was warm at 60 today, rain back on Tuesday for a week or so, it has been nice for four days.

Agree with Oregon Parks posts. Off I-5, route 20 takes you to Newport and Oregon Parks "Southbeach." ( right off highway 101) Make reservations through Reserve America site. Newport has many things to see including light house, bridge, wax museum, food. Great area and you can either go north or south on highway 101 for more things to see and do.

Thanks for all the information. The Oregon coast sounds amazing! We are continuing to make reservations and are finding out many CG are filling up already for June (our return trip to Illinois).
