Winegard Traveler and the wind
Got pretty windy last night and I worried about whether to put the antenna down or not. We're new to this set up, what do those of you who've had one for a while do. Up or down and how windy is too windy? Thanks!

Dick- We've had ours for 2.5 years. There have been times the wind was blowing so hard, I felt better to lower it (better safe than sorry). Then when the wind dies, I raise it back up..

I have never lowered mine in moderate wind speeds. But if the wind was strong enough to rock the camper, I would probably consider taking it down. Easy up, easy down.

We are very close to ocean and have seen gusts at 40 mph + and sustained winds of 30 mph + and have never lowed the dish or lost signal. This is a great system.

We have never lowered ours either, went through thunderstorms with some pretty substantial winds.

Dick we have had ours for over 2 years, we have had some pretty wild winds camped in Yuma the last couple of years, in excess of 40 mph and have had that and more here at home. I have lost reception during those times but have never lowered the antenna. Other than when traveling mine is up at "all" times so it has seen lots of wind with no problem. I keep it up to maintain the information on the receivers in the Montana, very important if we are heading South.
My feeling is that it is harder on the dish when going through it's stow procedure than remaining up. I think there is a wind speed rating on the owners manual, but might be thinking of my Ham antenna rotators.

From the Winegard site,
If the customer is willing to be in the coach, the winds are not high enough to require stowing the unit. It will find the signal in a 50 mph wind assuming the structure it is mounted on is not moving.
The TRAV'LER is rated to operate deployed in up to a 50 mph wind, and is rated for up to 150 mph when stowed.
I like the part, 'If the customer is willing to be in the coach'

Me too. We are probably bigger chickens than it is. Thanks for all the help.

We had ours up in a very heavy wind storm at the coast. I did not lower the Antenna but should have. When we were leaving and I was lowering the antenna it stopped and would not lower with an error code on the control. After freaking out for a brief moment, I pressed the off button again and it then went through its normal docking. Only time it has happened and I thought maybe the wind moved it enough that the controller stopped the process.

If you would have asked me this question in the spring I would have said lower it when winds get above 25mph. But when the F-4 blasted through this area we vacated the Monte and took off in the truck. I thought I held the button to lower the dish but I guess it hit it too quick and it stayed up. Winds in the RV park probably didn't get over 50mph since the tornado missed it by several miles. I got up on the roof and checked everything over and it was fine. So now I am confident these things can stand up to sustained 40mph winds. I would still lower mine if gusts were going to be over 45 though.

We've never put ours down until ready to break camp.

I guess I'm over cautious. If the gusts are shaking the trailer and the wind noise is keeping me awake, it goes down. I'm just not sure about 12 or so 1" screws into particle board with a large sail. I wonder if my extended warranty would cover the repairs if it did damage? It sounds as if a number of you have tested it's resilience and it holds and that's somewhat comforting.

I totally agree with this statement about the 1" screws into OSB. I had mine installed at a CW facility and I suspect (hope) they were professional enough to put down sealer/adhesive under it when mounting, which would add greatly to the stability on the roof.
