Larger fuel tank

We replaced our standard (34 gal) fuel tank with a 56 gallon tank several months ago ( 2006 Dodge 5.9 liter Megacab). I debated back and forth about an aux tank in the short bed or replacing the oem one. Everyone will have different needs so no one decision is correct for all. I chose the oem replacement for three reasons.I didn't want to lose any space in my in-bed tool box. I didn't want to have to fill two tanks when I was near empty and I finally decided that 56 gallons would get me through a full day of towing and I really didn't need 70 to 90 gallons of fuel. The third reason was difficult since I was intrigued with the super range I would get from more fuel. I love the extra capacity and am very happy I made the purchase. It reduced one of my personal aggravations of worrying about where I could refuel each day. We almost always disconnect the truck at night, so it's easier to refuel just the truck rather than the truck trailer combo. Just posting this for information for anyone considering adding extra fuel capacity.

Charles, we added the extra fuel capacity 3 years ago by adding an axillary 50 gallon tank and are extremely pleased we did. It doesn't matter(IMHO) which route one goes, adding an aux. or expand on OEM tank the end result is like you say, no more worrying about your next fuel stop until you unhook each night, Priceless!!!

I've been thinking the same, and don't like the uncertainty of getting in and out of tight stations. I'm almost always towing solo without a spotter to help if I get into a back-up situation. I think a small 18 - 20 aux tank would give me all the range I could stand for one day but most of the tanks I've seen are much larger than that and are higher than my tonneau cover.

I have a extra capasity tank in my truck and there has been two occaisions that it has save the day, love it.
I think that if the OEM type is what you want or a in bed, all are ok, some have pluses and minuses depending on the persons needs..It was a good investment for me also.

Yeah, I am seriously considering replacing the 26 gallon tank on my 2011 F250 with the Titan 52 gallon OEM replacement. Even at 10MPG that is 500 miles of range. Thanks for the confirmation that it was a good decision. Now I just need to part with the $$$ and get it done.

Aux tank is great. Had one on my Ford and used it all the time. Loved it.

WARNING: You may just cry a little first time you have to fill it. In the end you use the same amount of fuel but buying it all at once can bring a tear to your eye.

In our first TV, we had a 35 gal TransferFlow put in the bed. We lost about 10 inches of space. In our current dually, we have a 50 gal tank/tool box combo. That give us 80 useable gallons. I reset the odometer everytime I fill up and don't start looking for fuel until around 750 miles (towing).

Being able to choose your state for refueling is GREAT.

I have the RDS 50 gal combo and it fits nicely under my cover. Having to NEVER refuel hooked up is great.

We are on our second Transfer Flow 56 Gal underbed OEM replacement tank, the first in our 2500 Chevy and this one in our 3500 Chevy Dually. We did this for the reasons listed by CBTraveler. We wouldn't have it any other way as it leaves our bed completely open for our toolbox which houses our Ginny, tools, and compressor. The TF tankis are pricey but we feel competent they are the best. Others have their choices, this was ours.....

Have been running a 55 gallon auxillary fuel tank in the box and love it, gives us about 97 gallons in total! You can take the time to pick your fuel stations and locations. We had it custom built with a storage area on top, and to suit our needs, so it is very easy to remove at any time that we would need our full box length. With the tank in, we still have lots of room in front of the 5th wheel hitch.

i have question if your truck comes with a calulator that estimates your mileage on the information centre will the bigger tank mess this system up?

of corse it will if the computer thinks it only has the OEM tank in it thats what it will estimates for that amount only, I dont know if they can be reprogramed with a new fuel amount, but I'll bet it can be reprogramed to the new tank ammount.

I was told the fuel computer CAN NOT be reprogramed. What I go by is the amount of fuel used, which is accurate and the MPG. Works for me..... AND, the analog fuel gauge is accurate also......

We thought we would get the extra fuel tank in the bed when we started this long time adventure but after 1 year of travel we realized that we stopped every 3 or 4 hours and never had a issue finding a fuel station or problems fueling so we decided to spend the $$$ elsewhere.... personal decision.

I find stations such as Pilot are much higher in price than those I find near the campgrounds. Sixty gallons and a ten cent price differance soon adds up.
Diesel just jumped 24 cents overnight.

As I type this my Transfer Flow Toolbox/fuel tank combo is being installed today... I went with the in bed combo because I needed the tool box plus it's easily removeable if I change trucks. I just have bad timing installing with todays fuel prices. I'll have the tank but it wiil be empty...

Titan http://www.titanfueltanks.com is another tank I was looking at albeit more expensive than the Transfer Flow. The Transfer Flow is made of steel and the Titan is polyethylene which is what your OEM is. IMO... Had I gone with a OEM replacement I would have gone with the Titan being made of the same material where it doesn't hang down below the frame rails (only 1 inch)like the Transfer Flow does.

Tim fill it now while the price is low they expect it to hit 5 per gal. I have both of mine full and it only cost me $ 265.00 @ 3.79 last week if at 5 per it will be 350.00 for 70 gals. also transfer flow usuall fills up the tank after they install it how come this guy isnt doing that.
