Glacier Nat'l Park then up to Jasper in Canada in
We are planning a trip to Glacier the first week of October and then on up to Jasper Nat'l Park in Canada. Any thoughts on what that mignt be like. We enjoy cold weather and snow is no big deal. Have 4x4 truck and chains for both truck and Monty.

Generally speaking, it's beautiful summer weather up the Banff-Jasper Highway at this time of year. If you can, try to get off onto the old road that intersects the highway at various spots (it is paved). Don't miss Lake Louise, the Columbia Icefields, Miette Hot Springs, Banff, Maligne Lake,...,the list goes on.

We were up there (without the trailer) in early August 3 yrs ago. Ran into an heck of a snow storm on the pass on the ice fields parkway. I would think in Oct you just need to be prepared for winter weather and be flexible on your time.

This might help you once you are on the road it is the weather site for Canada. It is hard to predict in that area any time of the year.

Re-reading more carefully...in October there can be snowstorms. In 2006 we encountered one, but all the traffic got through reasonably comfortably at a reduced speed. The upside is that there is no traffic on the old highway, so you get the vistas and roadside attractions almost all to yourself. Lake Louise and other spots are not crowded.

Capt Kidd, Going to the Sun Road in Glacier may be snowed in for part of its distance by the first of October. But it's always possible it might not be. You can't tow all the way across that road anyhow. But you'd miss out on some sightseeing. This year has been weird for weather so maybe it won't be a problem. Good luck. That sure is gorgeous country.

Don,
The Going-to-the-sun Road is undergoing a major rehabilitation. They say they will be working on it for 8 - 10 YEARS.
"5.Schedules for the multi-year rehabilitation call for opening lower elevations in the spring as weather and work permits and opening the alpine section over Logan Pass from mid-June to mid-September. In 2009, once open, the entire Sun Road will be open through Sunday, September 20, weather permitting."
You can read more about it at: http://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/gttsrtop10.htm
I would suggest that you call ahead to see what campgrounds will be open at Glacier, Jasper and points in between. A lot of commercial campgrounds close at the end of September as you move north and the parks start closing some of there campgrounds as well.
Last year we found campgrounds closing as early as Labor Day in the Yukon and we were just ahead of the campground closing as we drove across Canada in late September.

Agree w/some earlier posts re. CG availability. Maybe call or check Trailer Life Directory. We were there in late August a few years ago and had a mixed bag weatherwise. Some great days, then snow in Banff! In August! Gorgeous trip. Also do Waterton and Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump. Near Ft. McLeod.

Capt kidd, we are leaving BC Aug 10 and have reservations at Mountain Meadows Aug 15-22. Our trip will take us down to I-90 and over to Soap Lake a couple of nites, Idaho a couple of nites then to MM. We think we will come back home on the Canadian side. If we find any obstacles we could let you know.

Friends just came up from Glacier to Babs. The hiway is pretty winding and slow going. October can be dicey weather wise. We have had snow every month of the year here. As long as you have time and are prepared for cold weather. Campgrounds can be a problem that late, just check ahead. There aren't too many that stay open past September because of danger of freezing.
