Transfer switch failure (I THOUGHT)

My 2017 Montana came with the 50 amp socket on the rear. I added a front 50 amp socket and a Progressive Dynamic transfer switch.

Problem solved: Per the installation directions, the transfer switch needs 109 volts on L3 to activate that relay from either socket. I was only getting 110 from the rear socket but the front socket was working. After a few days of trouble shooting and even replacing the transfer switch I found the power cord from pedestal to RV socket had a loose connections at the plug. Read below if you want the long six pack version.

LONG VERSION.

We arrived home and had no power to the RV from the rear socket. I used an additional (50 amp) extension cord to get power to the front socket which worked.

So I assumed it was a problem with the transfer switch and ordered a replacement.

I installed the replacement and found neither front nor rear socket would activate the transfer switch.

After taking some voltage readings I found I had 110 volts on one leg going to L3 of the relay and 125 volts on the other leg. L3 on either relay needs over 109 so 110 did not work.

I check my pedestal and it had 124 and 125 volts on the two legs.

I checked the power cord and found a loose connection on the red (Hot) wire and also the white (common) wire of the plug that goes into the pedestal. Cleaned up the wiring and all works fine.

As we have stated many time If there is a screw involved in electrical connections MAKE SURE IT IS TIGHT.

Jim Fischer my next door neighbor helped with the trouble shooting. With open wires or uncovered connections (for voltage readings) a second person is a major SAFETY factor. Besides a second brain troubleshooting he could pull the power connect if needed.

Never hurts to have a "safety". Unless of course he drinks all of your beer
