Tank valves

Has anyone replaced the waste tank valves with the new Valterra electric waste tank valves? If so how do you like them and how well do they work?

We had problems with the black tank valve on our previous (SOB) trailer so we got a Valterra valve that fits on the end of the dumping outlet. It was the easiest fix. We have even ordered a new one for the new Monty and we haven't even used it (the trailer) yet. We call it insurance against possible future problems.

Adding the valve at the end of the dump tube is just a good idea, both as a safety for the other valves and it avoids the quart of bad juju liquid when you remove the cap to hook up slinky.


Get them on Amazon for about $25.00 and it just twists on like the slinky.

just a reminder to keep that extra valve open in cold weather. since that part of the sewer tube is exposed any juju will freeze.

we have an island sink with holding tank dump valve mounted right behind the tire and you have to push the slide out alittle to access it. It finally broke in the open position so I just put one of those valves on the end of the dump.
I'm still trying to figure out what genius would put a dump valve where it can't be accessed.

I have the dump valve also and it is great for when you take your cap off to hook-up your sewer hose but remember if you are doing it because your sewer valve is leaking then you can create a dry tank as the drain pipe can hold several gallons of water. With the water drained into the line you could wind up creating a build-up of solid waste in your tank.This might sound far fetched but if you drain your tank to soon then this could happen.

One other tip for guys whose memory is kinda short like mine....when you are flushing black tank using the outside shower hose be sure you shut off shower faucet when you are done. If you don't you may overload the capability of the black tank and that weak upper seam may rupture . Don't ask me how I am so sure this can happen. Yep, in shop now. Was so lucky that I had cleaned black tank so thoroughly that it was very clean eruption . Sounded like & felt like we had bee hit by a vehicle or tree limb. Lucky we were still at RV or else It would have flooded entire trailer. Had come up into toilet bowl about 6" when it burst. Just my first experience , hope its the last!

On my galley grey tank which is above the axle, my cable valve was extremely difficult to open and close. Fearing it would break, I left it open and cut the 2" line and installed a manual valve. Best thing I could have done. Ive already replaced both of my other 3" valves due to stiff cables...

I've never understood why the rv industry has not started using steel rods instead of cables.The rods could be inclosed in tubing to keep them from bending or flexing and would be more direct when opening or closing the valves. I guess the 20.00 more to make this happen is just to much for the rv industry to comprehend. The cables on these valves are probably one of the most aggravating things on these rv's. I doubt anyone has not had a problem with these valves if you've had an rv very long.

Are you new to RV'ing? (not trying to be rude) Just wondered because my old 2006 Montana had steel rods. I think sometime between 2008 and 2012 they went to cables and I am pretty sure no one likes them.

I'm not quite convinced that the RV industry is interested in making anything better. Until people stop buying because of poor quaility I fear nothing will change...

I bought my first rv back in 1997 and took it back to the dealer after about 2 months because of reverse osmosis on the aluminum studs caused it to look like it had termites. I received every dollar back i paid the dealer including the extras i had bought. This was a Fleetwood Savanna. Ibought my next rv in 2012 and it had the cables we all have now. I currently have this 2014 Montana and of course it still has the cables. I don't remember if they had cables or rods back in '97' because i had much bigger problems than the tank valves.If they had rods before then changed to cables then i would say they are regressing.

Mudchief, thank you for the reminder. The electric valves must not be used very much as tne lack of replies about them.

maximo, I know some have put them on and have been happy with them. I think the reason most don't use them is the price.
