Tire Pressure for Tow Vehicle

I have a 2006 GMC Dually with Firestone Transforce HT 235/85-16's. When the 5th wheel is hooked up and ready to go there are 6100 lbs on the rear axle.....What would be a good pressure to run in the tires??

Check the sidewalls of the tires and your owners manual for the truck. On ours the recommendation is 70# in the rear and 60# in the front, but that's for our Dodge 2500 SRW. Yours will be somewhat different but should be covered in the towing or tire section of the owners manual or both.

There should be a sticker on the driver's side door or door post that tells you what to run. The maximum wt on the rear is 3085/ tire at 80 lbs. If your wt is correct you can run 70. That is from the tire and rim association chart dated 2005. It may, and probably has, been changed.

I'm different, I always run the side wall pressure, and I have 17.5" tires and the Pressure is 125lbs. I do think you want have as much side wall flex, hence less heat. Most tire's or I should say many failures are caused by heat. Heat is a enemy to tires... Good Luck on your choice. Happy Trails....

P.S. Keep in mind I'm not a tire expert.... It just works for me.

Look at the sticker on the door to see what the recommended inflation should be. It is based on whether you have a single rear wheel or a dual (duals have a lower load rating because of possible interference between the tire sidewalls) and the axle load. A tire is a spring, and its pressure is based on the load it carries. Over or under inflating can affect the life of the tire and the handling of the vehicle. Automatically inflating the tire to its maximum pressure (for maximum load) can result in a harsh ride and poor handling if the load is much less.

Go online to Bridgestone/Firestone and get the load inflation tables for your tires. A number of people will overinflate by up to 10 pounds, but never exceed the maximum on the sidewall.

Thanks guys, I finally found the Firestone load inflation table now I can be flexible with the TV tire pressure. Running max pressure gives such a hard ride. Thanks again.
