How To Check For Worn Suspension Photos

Well, here is how to see if the suspension is worn without removing bolts, which I'm sure most of you don't want to do. Especially since the bolts shouldn't be used again.

The trick is to measure the space between the suspension bolts. All four links should be the same. I now use a spare link to compare, (available from your dealer) but a good eye and a tape measure, or a little wooden or metal jig would also work.

First, the bolts used are shoulder bolts. Note the holes in the link are drilled to fit up on the shoulder, not on the threads.

When you crawl undeneath and hold up the spare link it fits loose over the threaded ends of the bolts. As the links and plastic bushings wear, the two bolts move further apart. The day I go under to check and the link fits tight or won't go over the threaded portion of the bolt is the day I re-do the links and bushings.

Hope this helps keep some of you folks from a nasty surprise!!

Using that link to check for wear is a great idea.
Thanks for all the good posts and pictures you've shared with us. I for one will be keeping a close eye on my supension from now on.

Excellent idea Gruffy. I was planning on pulling my wheels and greasing my axles this week in preparation for the trip to the rally. Was also planning on some rust proofing. I got out my metal ruler and I was going to measure the distance between the holes for baseline info.

Gruffy, do you know what the distance is exactly hole to hole on new ones???

I also plan some pix's with my new camera.

Depends.. Montana has used different parts, the parts I used came from an outfit called Stanstead ... so each one is slightly different. You have to try to match up the same parts.

Thanks for all your information and the photos. You have provided such valuable information to those of us who wouldn't have had a clue to check until something went wrong.

OK, you now have my attention. Where do I look for this suspension Bolt.

Great pictures.

Under the 5er between the wheels...note the spring end to the top right......You can see tire tread between the thumb and index finger.

I only eyeballed it awhile back but without your level of precision. I just saved this thread and will print the appropriate portions, with pictures, to go out and check more closely. Thanks for providing this.
