Death Valley

We are planning on camping in the Furnace Creek area of Death Valley in early April. Which campgrounds have hookups?

Stovepipe Wells has 14 full hookups. Close sometime around April.

Check web site here.

Note, we were there in mid March 2013 and it was over 90 one or two days.

I blogged it here. This is arrival day, There is a photo of our Tana sitting on site. There are several other blogs, posted after this, snoop around on the blog, hopefully they will help you.

It isn't far if you want to stay in Pahrump where you can find full hook ups. I doubt Death Valley will have many people in April because of the heat. You might want to rethink and go earlier.

Average April temp is 88. That wouldn't bother us but may be too much for you

I am pretty sure Stovepipe is open all year. And it looked bigger than just 14 sites. We have stayed there in July 2012 and had hookups.

From the web site:

"Stovepipe Wells Village offers 14 full-hookup RV sites for $32.75 per night, adjacent to the General Store. Spots fill up quickly so use our online reservations system to search for available dates. The RV fee includes access to the swimming pool and Wi-Fi access in the hotel lobby. Of course, everyone is welcome to join us for great food and beverage options at the Toll Road Restaurant and Badwater Saloon. Please check in at the Front Desk upon arrival.

If you’re looking for an ideal camping experience, the National Park Service operates a rustic campground at Stovepipe Wells Village. The 190 sites are available on a first-come-first-serve basis from October through April for $12 a night. No hookups are available. Campers are invited to enjoy our swimming pool and showers for a nominal fee. Please inquire at the Front Desk area for more information."

Things change ALL the time, your best bet is to get on the phone and call. This appears to say they will not be open May, June, July, August, or September. They did change vendors sometime, according to this note that pops up when I do a search for Stovepipe Wells camping:

"Xanterra Parks & Resorts® no longer manages Stovepipe Wells Village in Death Valley National Park."

Seriously, when we were there about one year ago, there were 14 full service hook up sites, all the rest were boondocking. Reservations were tough to get, we managed to snag 3 or 4 nights, and that was it. My memory leaks, but, I thought they said they were getting ready to shut down for the summer.

CALL!! Even what we find on the web sites could be wrong!

Thank you all for your feedback. I agree that the average temperature in April can be dicey - my wife is recovering from surgery to repair her torn achilles tendon and that is about the earliest she can go and hope to do some hiking. I guess the good news is that with mountains rising to 11,000 feet we can pick where we go to find nice temperatures during the day.

Here is some other info I dug up on hookups in Death Valley:

The Furnace Creek Resort has a campground that has hookups it also has WiFi and a pool.

Also the Furnace Creek campground has some sites that have hookups: The newly remodeled and renumbered campground now has RV sites (10-87), with several having full hookups. The full hookup sites are 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 67, 68, 69, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76 and 77.

Um, the REAL Death Valley is much nicer and is in South Carolina. Peak season is Sept to Nov. Go Tigers!
