Fifth Airborne

I just had my Fifth Airborne pin box replaced with a new one because the lower plate on the original pin box was rubbing on the left guide on the upper box. Another way to describe the situation is that the lower plate is not centered in the upper part of the pin box and the paint is being scratched off where the two parts are rubbing against each other. The lower plate on the new pin box is already showing the abrasion of being off-center and scraping the paint off of the lower plate. I do not know if there is any adjustment to center the lower plate so it does not rub against the sides of the upper box. Has anyone had a similar situation?

I just installed a Fifth Airborne pin box on my Montana Wednesday and have not pulled with it yet. Did you replace with another Fifth Airborne and did they warranty it? I do not see any way to adjust that plate. What do you think could have happened to shift the plate off center?

No problem here. Might have been defective with the forward pivot set incorrectly.

No problem so far with ours. DW loves the ride. Did any of you get the extention for the air valve. They sent me one with no cost.

Thanks for the responses so far. As I indicated, the replacement Fifth Airborne was done under warranty through Camping World (where I bought it originally). The new pin box is still showing a rubbing of the lower plate to the upper box. Is there an adjustment to center the lower plate? I did not receive an owners manual or any other information about the hitch.

The only adjustment I could think of would be to add a shim washer to the pivot bolt on one side. I don't know if there is room to do so.

By-the-way, because of the costs associated with the shock absorbing pinboxes, direct comparisons are not usually made. However, on my 2003 Big Sky I had a 5th Airborne. On the 2008 Big Sky I have a TrailAire. I have towed each several thousand miles on a wide variety of road surfaces. Based on my experience with them both, they both help a great deal. Neither remove all jostling from a bad road surface. Of the two, both Dianna and I agree that the 5th Airborne is the better of the two.

Sounds like your hitch, not the pin box. Mine is great after 10K plus miles..

Mark,
I received the extension for mine because I had to adj the bag back far enough that I couldn't access the valve. I had to adj it there to get the proper amount of air in it. They should just include it with the hitch . It makes checking air pressure much easier. I mounted mine in the side.
