Prodigy ?

I recently purchased the prodigy brake controller. I installed it and everything was working for about 25 milies down the road. Suddenly I was having problems...The prodigy was flashing 5.H. When I got to the campground I found I had a short.(there was a white wire that came disconnected on the female plug and fixed that)It worked again for about 20 miles and then did the same thing (5.H) I then plugged it into the bumper plug (factory installed) it did it again, O.L (overload) and 5.H wire short. I am really stumped on this.
Could it be the wiring in the camper? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Campbud here are the codes from the web site http://www.tekonsha.com/faqprodigy.html#008 the 5h may be the SH errow code? With my 2955rl I have had to replace two magnets in the rear axle because the wires wore holes to ground. I'd look there FIRST good luck!

The 5er is 4 months old and just changed out the second magnet. This may help some of the Monte owners with Dexter axles; the magnet wires are rubbing what Dexter calls the actuating lever until the wires short out. The Prodigy will show OP, or SH errors. Called Dexter to inform them of the problem and ask for there fix. After some discussion, we both came up with wrap the wire with some of that slinky like stuff, and try to get some clearance for the wire. Hope this may help some of you to save us time and money with dealer’s costly repairs.

Those wires inside the drum seem to be frequent culprits according to the number of posts on this forum. Also, the wire connectors just outside the drum tend to allow moisture in to corrode the connection. And sometimes the wires near the axles will rub and eventually short to ground.

I also had brake problems, and it was a short in the brake drum. It shorted out on what I call the swing arm with the magnet on the end. There is suppose to be two clips to hold the wire from moving. To find which wheel is the problem, (others on the forum may have different ways). What I did, was jack up one wheel at a time and have some one apply the brakes and try to rotate the wheel back and forth to see if it shows up on the brake controller. If that doesn't work, I cut the wire to one of the wheels (one at a time) rather then taking all the wheels off to check it for a short. If it isn't that one, try the next one. When you find the one that doesn't show a short, that is the wheel, then pull the wheel off and drum. You have to look very close at the wire to find the short. When done I solder the wires then use a wire nut, then tape it, then a zip tie on the tape. Just my two cents worth, hope you find your problem.

So if it is a short in the brake drum, does this fall under warranty where I can just take it in and have them fix it?

I would call your dealer to find out if its covered, if that is the problem. I'm sure Steve will jump in and give you some phone numbers to help you out. Larry & LaVonne

YES it happened to my Monty, I took it in with the error code they looked at the truck first and found it was a bad magnet. They fixed it under warranty. Then I had a second magnet go bad same codes, I asked the dealer to send me the magnet it was installed at home no 2hour drive or overnight stay at the campground. I broke down the other three hubs did a grease job, cleaning and rotated the wheel at the same time

Cruzin, I like your approach to troubleshooting.

Similar problem on our first Montana was covered under warranty. Ours was wiring external to the hub area.

Thanks everyone for all your information. I called the dealer and they are going to take a look at it. Our truck checked out ok so it has to be a problem with the Monty I'll let you all know what happens.
