need a good grease gun

I have the EZ-Lube system and want to lube the bearings myself using the system. Can someone recommend a good hand pump grease gun. Since I have to turn the wheel while pumping the gun, I'd like one that somehow attaches to the grease fittings and lock on so I can use one hand on the wheel and one on the pump.

I do have one like that and it has about a 12" or so flexible nozzle. I got it at Autozone, but I believe most autoparts stores like Chief, Pepboys, etc. will have them. I had good success finding it by asking an attendant. I wish the flex line were shorter because there is a lot of grease in the line before it starts squirting into the fitting. The other option had a fixed nozzle but it was pretty short, and like you suggest, wanted a long enough nozzle to reach as needed and still be able to rotate the wheel.

Good deal suggesting a hand operated tool. It's what I read was recommended since a power unit might be too powerful and you want to do this slowly so as not to compromise the seals.

I use a standard gun with a rigid tip. Probably look a little funny, but I sit on a plastic box, one hand holding the gun, other hand pumping, and turning the wheel by raising one foot and using it to turn the wheel.

At home and work, I use a Lincoln battery powered grease gun. The finest thing since sliced bread. Its a little pricey upfront but it gets the job done.

I Use Lincoln or Alemite guns both equipped with 18" flex hoses. The hoses are either Alemite or Lincoln. Cheaper hoses have blown apart.

I use one that I got at Walmart...solid extension and you can operate it with one hand while Turing the wheel with the other hand...it has like a pistol grip..works great for me..

Have fun pumping a whole tube of grease per wheel and then wondering if the rear wheel seal held. I realize it is me, myself and I talking, but I can have the wheel off and bearings out for inspection in the same amount of time.

Good luck with those EZ-lub spindles. After one very bad experience with them I will never trust them again. I asked the dealer to "repack" the bearings. To me, an old school mechanic, that means/meant 'remove the bearings, clean and inspect, then manually repack grease into them nd reassemble. But NO! The guy pumps greas into the zerks fitting.....took the easy way. Two days laster we head for Bar harbor, MA, and I can't stop the damn trailer. Like there were no brakes. First stop I pull one wheel and find the brake drum full of grease. Turns out three of the four seals blew out and ruined my brakes. Two days, all new brake shoes AND magnates, 8 cans of brake clean and a ton of work later, we were back on the road.
Point is.......don't use those grease fittings. Disassemble, clean and inspect, repack those bearings. You will not be sorry.

Agree, I always do it the old fashioned way, same way I always have since I got my first car at 16.

Do what you want, but Dexter states that the EZ Lube axles are designed to allow immersion in water, like on a boat trailer that is used to launch a boat with the axles under water. Bearings only need lubrication on an annual service, at the same time you do a brake inspection, so for most trailers, the EZ Lube system is a waste of time and too risky to use and chance greasing the brakes. Get grease on the brakes, and you will get to spend upwards of $500 or more, just for parts and repairs to restore the brake system. I used the EZ Lube once, followed the directions exactly, and the seals failed on three of the hubs. I pack the bearings by hand now, much quicker and cheaper.

We had ours done at rally a few years ago. We think, but can't prove that after having the bearings greased by taking the wheels off, another employee pumped grease in. The result was blown seals, damage to the magnets and drums. Fortunately they stepped up and paid for it. My lesson was to do it the old fashioned way. Take the drum off, pack and adjust bearings, check brakes, reassemble.
