Bedroom TV

My wife wants to change out the TV in the bedroom of our 3402RL (not a problem - what the wife wants the wife gets). We found one that she wants but it only came with the standard electrical plug and the outlet where the TV is mounted takes a 12v plug. Are all TVs compatible with the 12v connection? The one on the existing TV doesn't fit the new TV so is it simply a matter of finding the appropriate cord?

we also have the 3402 and we also replaced the cost effective Jensen TV .There should be a 120 outlet on wall by the chest of drawers just route the power cord over there.

I did see the outlet next to the dresser but I'm hoping to keep the cords as concealed as possible. That option will suffice as a fallback position.

Although there are a variety of different LED TV's out there, there is only a very limited amount that are both 110v and 12v, are at least 24" wide diaganonally, and have a built-in DVD player. I love my Naxa TV in the bedroom. It's big enough but not overly big, and since both my satellite and all three of the TV's in our Monte are on a solar recharged 12v system, I can watch them anytime, anywhere without bothering anyone with a generator.

Here's the Naxa link: http://bit.ly/1gs2scu

No it is not a matter of finding the appropriate cord. You have a 12volt d/c outlet. If that is the outlet you want to use you must get a 12 volt d/c television or one like Rainer is suggesting. Or, you can get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/outlets-invert...lt+dc+inverter
Just find out the amp draw of your TV and get the appropriate size inverter. Jim

The NAXA TV might be the way to go but where did you find it?

The cords do not interconnect because it is not safe to do so. You need more than an adapter, therefore....

Yup, a power inverter (converts 12v to 110v) would be a good solution. Just watch out for the power rating in the inverter. I have a 400W inverter I use in my truck when powering laptops or any other 110v requirement, but the 12v outlet only allows about 100 to 150 watts of usage. To get the full 400W I would have to wire directly to the truck battery, and I just haven't done it, since I want to be able to take the inverter with me. My thinking was the 400W rating means it should have power to spare.

In your case a smaller 100 to 200w should suffice. Jimcol's link shows a 300W unit so that should be more than enough. Keep in mind the unit does draw amperage when in use, for example, I don't use mine in the truck unless the truck is running, or in the rig without being on shore power. You don't want to risk dead batteries.

Since you are swapping out the television there are some that are 12v operated (but probably pricier in comparison). Is that what you have now and is it plugged into the 12v receptacle, then it's just a direct swapout. As for NAXA units, do an internet search and you'll even find naxa.com. Even if they only use 110v tv, an inverter will convert it to 12v to use with your receptacle.

Before going with a power inverter, you need to determine two things. What is the maximum wattage the TV draws, and how many amps will an inverter large enough to handle that wattage continuously require. Then check the fuse on the 12 volt outlet. If it's less than the amps required by the inverter, you are out of luck. If the outlet has a 15 amp fuse and the inverter requires 20 amps, DO NOT replace the 15 amp fuse with a 20 amp fuse.

Thanks to all who responded to my post. It seems that something seemingly very simple brought about some very involved, and somewhat confusing, answers. I think the logical thing to do is to pick out a TV already wired for the 12v connection. I'm sure my wife can find one that she'll like just as well as the one she previously picked. Thanks again.

That's a great point Tom. I would have no idea how heavy the wire is on the OP's unit. I know on mine it is only on a 15amp fuse and only controls the amplifier on the antenae. Jim

Here's how to find just about anything for sale on the Internet for the best pricing:
  • Type what you're looking for in a Google search
  • Before hitting "Enter", choose the word "Shopping" near the top of your screen
  • You'll be rewarded with a wide variety of vendors, find the one that appeals to you the most

I replaced our Jensen with a 22in Sansui. There is a channel in the wall from the 120 outlet next to the dresser to the ceiling. I just cut a new opening for a shallow outlet box and installed a new outlet. The outlet is just a few inches from the upper cabinet so little of the cord shows.

I am the "happy wife." I found an Axess TV on Amazon (i have never heard of this brand before) that has the car cord adapter. It has a DVD player on the side, and 2 HDMI ports. It even has a USB port. It works great.
