Fire Safety Check

I was talking with some RV owners and an interesting topic came up, Escape Windows. It turns out that the escape windows should be checked 2-3 times a year because they stick. They told me of an unfortunate family that had the misfortune of a stuck escape window. It seems to be a characteristic that the rubber will bond to the window frames in time and makes them hard to open, only by forcing them. I have noticed it on mine at times, but hadn't thought past getting it opened. Just another item to put on your check list before traveling. Also, to have extra extinguishers throughout the coach. Hope this helps and keeps you safe.

Yes, they do stick - I've been known to check them so that's a good idea... However... even after getting the escape window open, they are so high I know the fall will cripple me. DW already warned me that I have to go first, so that when she follows, the landing will be softer for her. I just hope I'll be able to crawl away from harm's way because I'm afraid she won't be able to drag me.

Funny you should bring this up. Yesterday I checked smoke detector and it was dead then checked the fire extinguisher and it was dead. So new ones in place today and checked the window too...

Yup, major concern of ours. We have a heavy wooden rod in the bedroom to attach an escape ladder to and a cut off broom handle to hold the window open (or open it the hard way if it sticks) and six extinguishers in the rig, five of which are the kind you can spray on yourself if need be.

X2. Yes my choices are clear. Get to back door or die! I won't fit through window and it's a life choice!

When going through our pre delivery inspection the salesperson told me to be very careful if I open the escape windows. He said that they're designed to release and drop out of the rig if opened beyond the red lever. Don't know if this is true, but in our previous rig I occasionally used to open the bedroom escape window all the way and stick my head out to talk to my husband when he was hooking up outside. That window never dropped off. Since I had been told to be careful with the newer windows, I haven't opened them.

When I was Rally master a couple of years ago, one of the questions I wanted answered for folks was could we check our escape windows. I thought it was a simple question. When I asked it the Keystone tech said he would have to check and get back to me. Took a week! But the answer was "I wouldn't do it". Different years also seem to have differently constructed windows. But that answer left me leaving ours closed.

Hummm. I've opened both of ours several times. We open the bedroom one every day and sometimes it gets pushed out a little further than it should. We only crack the rear open once in a while. I never opened it wide.

We use both ours all the time for air circulation and never have had a problem...and we have opened them all the way out to the red handle. Something else to remember with the escape windows...some have had them blow out going down the road. I use 3/4" x 6" Velcro cable ties to secure the handles prior to travel.

Some baby powder or talc on the rubber seal should prevent it from sticking.
