How do I keep this from happening

Every time I put my trailer in storage, I fill the toilet half full and close the lid. I figured that I need water in the bowl to keep the gasket/ball valve lubricated. I keep getting mold/mildew inside the bowl and also on the inside of vent cover overhead. Do I need to keep water in the bowl during storage?

I don't keep water in the bowl because of just what you described. If you are concerned about the gasket then put some vaseline on the gasket and it will keep it plyable.

Before we went full time we never kept water in the bowl and didn't have any issues.

No need for water in the bowl - have never had an issue keeping the bowl dry.

No petroleum products but veggie oil will keep the gasket from drying out. I keep water in the bowl and the vent opened and have not had any mold in 43 years.

Silicone spray will keep the bowl slick and the gasket lubricated.

A small amount of RV antifreeze has always worked for me in cold country.

Use plumbers grease on the bowl seal! it lasts longer! & I leave water in bowl and leave the all the vents open for air flow.

I don't worry about it. The seal gets lubed a couple times a season and pink stuff over the winter. If I get lucky this year, I get to replace that Thetford piece of junk with a SeaLand?Dometic 320

LOL that may not be just mold. I do volunteer water quality monitoring for LCRA. One of the things I test for it E. Coli. I am betting that is one of the things you are growing.

Folks have already giving lots of great ideas for alternative lubricants.

We don't store ours very often but when it is idle, I leave water with a little dawn dish soap in it which helps to keep the seal lubricated and the water stops any odor that may want to escape. Don't know if it is necessary but it has worked for us for many years. Also, I don't close the lid.
