Hot Water Heater Problem
I have a problem running my hot water heater on propane. It will not fire up. A couple of weeks ago I was doing some painting on my RV cover and heard my hot water heater trying to start up. I had no water in the water heater tank. I don't know how the HTR switch got turned on to make it run on propane. Both the electric and propane switches were supposed to be off. I turned the HTR switch off when I found that it was on and didn't think anything else about it. Well, this week we have taken a short trip and I turned the electric breaker on after filling the water heater with water. There is one more of us on this trip than usually goes with us so I thought I would turn on the gas switch to get a little faster recovery on the water heater; but, it will ot fire up on gas. The electric part works fine. Do you think the control unit on the water heater has gone bad from cycling on and off, or is there something else I can check to try to get the gas to fire up? Thanks for any help I can get.

ehmcfarl,
There is another thread on exactly this issue. You might want to check it out. It has been up for a few days and has several replies.

It's working. It seems that the gas will not even try to ignite if the temperature in the tank is too high. After I got back home yesterday I turned off the electric element and let the water in the tank cool over night. Today I had someone turn the gas switch on while I listened for it to try to light. After about 15-20 seconds after the gas switch was turned on it started clicking and fired right up. There was obviously nothing wrong with the heater at all except for the intelligence of the operator. Thanks for your suggestions.

Actually, I bet the operator has increased his intelligence a bunch...and we look forward to when you assist the rest of us when we are in need...
