2021 HD diesel pull tests...

I just saw this article on 2021 sled pulls between Chevy, Dodge, and Ford.

I suspected the Chevy to be at the bottom of the stack, but they actually won this contest, which surprised me. Granted, this is not how any of us pull, but it's still an interesting comparison of how each of them out power to the ground, which IS important to all of us.

At the end of the day, all three of these trucks are very very close in their capabilities, and you can't lose with any of them. It's a great time to be a consumer of HD diesel pickups!

I saw this already.

it is nice to know that if I am pulling without any trailer axils a Chevy will go further

Agree, all of the big 3 HD trucks are amazing!
I saw this test before, and think it is a great test. We buy HD trucks to pull, not to try to compete with other vehicles when empty. Thanks for sharing here.

Interesting to me is the RAM with Cummins and 6 speed. It is the slowest off the line when unloaded, yet it was the fastest off the line when loaded!

And, one other note, and a pet peeve as a RAM owner. Both the Ford and GM came with capable Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, but the RAM still uses inferior Firestone Transforce ATs. I believe the curves show that the tires started to become a limiting factor part way into the pull as the load increased. I'd like to see the if the test results would change if the RAM had the same tires as the others. C'mon RAM, stop putting junk tires on your trucks!

Fun to see; all good trucks. It would have been better if they all had the same tires and weight. Duallies would not have done well on the dirt. A good test would be to hook them all up to a 16k trailer and pull up a grade (paved). No wheelspin, no preload. Or, maybe let the Chevy preload and watch it break.

Anyone want to buy one of these test trucks?

Well how do I say this..... Hilarious! Do we finally have agreement that todays big three all produce fully capable trucks for their intended mission?

Start your stop watches, the next Ford vs GM vs Ram begins in 3, 2, 1....

A few years back I read a report on exactly what you want. I think somewhere in Co. Maybe 5-10 miles up a steep grade on highway (interstate?). They measured speed an time up the hill I think.
Chevy won by the way!

I think this might be what you are looking for... TFL Trucks does a test with lots of vehicles. They call it the Ike Gauntlet.

Yes, I could be happy with any of them.

I don't really need to see any tests; just entertainment. I know the difference between the top three is very small. Now, if we threw in a Toyota or Nisan, that would be entertaining.

Well actually Nissan had a pickup with a Cummins in it. It didn’t work out so good. It was a 5L. A neighbor had one and it was constant problems. Nissan couldn’t fix it and the factory rep after numerous attempts to fix it told him that it hadn’t been designed probably and could not be fixed. He bought a troubled free Ram SRW 3500. I think the problem was front end 4X4 system that wasn’t heavy enough. I think after a couple years they quit making them.

It’s called the Davis Damn. It’s on I70 in western Co. It’s one of the required tests for determining tow limits of new trucks. You haft to get your truck up it at, I think 50 MPH. with out any problem. The truck can’t over heat throw any codes, no check engine light or have any problem.

You are thinking of the Davis Dam grade, in Arizona between the Colorado river (Laughlin, NV) and Kingman on Hwy 68. Was on it a few weeks ago; no problem.

The "Ike Challenge" is an 8-mile stretch of I-70 interstate from Dillon, Colorado and up to over 11,158 feet above sea level at the Eisenhower/Johnson tunnels at the Continental Divide.

Just goes to prove that highest HP or torque doesn't always win.

This is actually what I found interesting about this test as well.

We can argue all day about the "real world" aspect of this test, but Chevy came to the test with the lowest torque, and middle HP. Pulling is 9/10's torque, and they win the thing. I figured they would be dead last. Chevy's have historically done terrible at pulling type events (in 4WD) because of their front ends, but did well here. I was surprised.

Several mentioned the TFL test, "The Ike Guantlet", and there is a lot of videos of them doing this on their website. This test is probably as real world as it gets, because they go up hill and down hill. In 2020, their winners went Ford, RAM, Chevy, and it's been a while since I watched those videos, and as I recall the Chevy was about 1 1/2 minutes slower than the Ford to the top.

At the end of the day, the 2020 and newer trucks are ALL great trucks, and
it's a great time to be a new truck owner...

Too bad they didn't use Rams 3500 H.O. Using a 3500 in the test wouldn't matter. Nice to see though that Rams standard powertrain hangs with the others closely.
