A fellow that sets up the electronics for the Canadian Coastguard recommends Garmin. If it is good enough for them I uess it is good enough for me. Yes we do have a Coastguard.

Garmin 330 or 340. Circuit City had a good buy on them this weekend. Best thing I have ever purchased.

We use the Delorme with our laptop but may go to a dash mounted Garmin because it gets uncomfortable on Carol's lap. I like the Delorme because the laptop is always near. When I was working and traveled I could use it in rental cars and so all was packed in my carry-on laptop bag.

I like the Garmin Nuvi because it is large enough to be functional on the dash and small enough to fit into your shirt pocket for walk around.

Well, I still like using Microsoft Streets and Trips on our lap top. I Iike the bigger screen and the route planning options. True, to use this while traveling, you do need a navigator to watch it, but Donna likes doing that. Just a personal bias, but I find the small screen dash mounted units difficult to follow and rather distracting. I would rather concentrate on the driving and let my navigator deal with the GPS. I think that people, myself included, probably adapt to whatever they have, and once they have got used to it, that is what they like. As long as you already have a lap top computer, Streets and Trips is a bargain compared to anything else.

Like John, like using Microsoft Streets and Trips on our lap top. Better mapping & can see surrounding Streets better on the larger screen.
I use 2 Garmin's as a back-up, one window mount & one handheld (also use for Geocaching).
As for holding the laptop.......made a little table.

I am still in the stone age with my GPS, a discontinued Garmn IQue 3600 with the latest map updates. This unit is a PDA with GPS. It sinks with my PC for PDA functions plus allows me to do trip planning on my PC then transfer it to the GPS. I agree the new units, even cell phones do more but it's paid for.

Thank you all for the responses, and John nice set up for your truck!
I will send all this info. to my brother, but will advise him to save his money, as he is a widower, on a pension, and he only goes to the Lake of the Ozarks in the Summer, and down here in the Winter. He has been doing both for over 20 years, if he doesn't know how to get to those two places, he has lost his memory. He really can't afford to buy an expensive GPS. But he is a big boy and will decide for himself.
Your information will assist him in his decision.
Thanks, again.

I must be in the minority with TomTom. There's a $100 IN STORE rebate this week on TomTom 720, got mine for less than $400.00!!!

From what I've seen, they are much cheaper on line. I saved over $400 on line versus Best Buy on a Garmin 2720.

Momma bought me the TomTom One 3rd addition for Christmas. But I have to wait til then to try it out. My son works at Radio Shack and says Tom Tom is the most popular that he sells. Great deals on many of the brands on-line now. Just find the one that does what you want it to. I don't need mp3 and video players, real view, bluetooth, or all them expensive options. Just get me there and show me places to eat, get gas and CGs to stop at on the way. As momma says, I'm easy! Good luck.

Well, I am really a loner as I have a Magellan RoadMate 6000T. "Alice" has become part of our family an very helpful in town. I don't use the GPS on a trip until I get near the town I am staying in then she helps me find the park. I think they are great for being in a strange town.

Low end Tom Toms and MIOs are $150 around here right now. If I were buying right now, I'd get a Nuvi 200 (no MP3s and no pix, but the same maps and POIs as the higher end 300 and 600 series.

Have had a Garmin Quest for about five years now, love it but screen is pretty small. I think if I was buying a new unit I would go for one of the ones with a larger screen like a Nuvi. I wish that Garmin would get their maps a bit more accurate. Up in northern Wisconsin they show me driving a quarter of a mile off the interstate or in the middle of a river. But even with those problems it gets me where I am going. It still beats the heck out of Map Quest... Dave and Betsy

Ozz -

If your brother is still in the market and would like the GPS but has a budget, there are still great bargains for not a lot of money. And, they do so much more than just give directions. I use mine all the time to know where the next rest area, restaurant or fuel station is located. Especially with Diesel being hard to find when you get into some areas, it's nice to be able to see services. The pioneers found their way across this country without GPS. They also did it without air conditioning, shock absorbers, rubber tires, etc. And, if I'm traveling alone, I don't have my DW to help navigate. Of course, she doesn't do well with her eyelids closed, either.

If he does get a lower price unit, I do recommend the Garmin. They have been noted for years for being easier to operate and great customer service. But, as with most electronics, the reliability and quality have improved over the years as have features and usability - so most brands will do great. Best of luck.

Wife just received my Garmin Street Piolot c340 my Christmas gift. We did not want to spend a lot of money on something that shows you direction. She is my navigator and is probably as good as most GPS systems. We were looking at a Garmin nuvi 240 but it did not use voice to tell you the name of the street or road when you make a turn. Best Buy and Circut City wanted $300.00 for the c340. We purchased the unit, with the dash mount and 12 volt charger for $260 on line, and everything was delivered in four days. Had to get the dash mount because we go to MN. to visit grand kids and you can't have anything mounted on your windshield.
