Rx's on the road
I have questions on this subject...
Cheryl and I plan on being away from N. Michigan for several months at a time. We have doctors up here. Ortho Dr that handles both an ongoing Workers Comp and other ongoing ortho work and Rxs. W/C adds to our situation as a pharmacy must be set up specifically to handle these Rxs. 2 of the 3 are Class II which complicates things - no mail orders. Also I have another Class II Rx that is not W/C. My pharmacist said I needed to be careful as he cannot fill any Rxs other than ones written from drs in Mich and "adjoining states". What do you guys do? I plan on running all this past my BX/BS, but I wanted to check in here, too.

I don't understand the Class II "no mail orders". I get mine through the mail and so did my Mother. You might need to check that out. Your W/C thing will probably be different than most people and be what is complicating your resolution.

Check out Walgreen's. When we had our stuff there, it could be filled anywhere without a hassle.

Walmart works the same way. As long as you're in their system, they can fill it from different states, even on Tricare.

Class II are for controlled substances. Vicadin and methylphenidate are Class II Rxs. Tylox is a Class III. Cannot be called in to a pharm. or mailed to you. You must personally pick them up from the Dr's office and hand deliver to a pharmacy. I have some Rxs that I do by mail order, and they will be no problem.
*on Edit~ I do get my W/C Rxs from Walgreens. I will check with them to see if they can transfer Rxs like this between stores. That would be a good solution...

We use CVS for ours. We used Walmart, but decided on CVS when we moved back north. Found out that Walmart was soaking us. My RX is for Lisinopril/Zestril. Walmart charged me $19.50 for thirty days; my share after insurance. CVS charges me $1.95 for the exact same RX. Hmmmmmm! When we go back south, we can transfer our prescriptions down there.

Walgreen's is national. Another option is Costco. We had a prescription transferred from Washington state to Austin TX Costco without any problem. Mind you it takes a couple of days but is doable.

We have Walgreens here, so we will use that for our regular Rxs. We are still working on the Class II solutions with the phamacy and the doctors.
BTW Myrna, Costco has a limited presence in MI, I find. 2 in Grand Rapids, a couple in Detroit - that's it. Nothing with 170 miles of us. As bad as a Camping World... =)

Dave - I also have to deal with Vicodin and Oxeycodin (sp) I found Costco handled everything just fine and infact when compairing, Beat walmart by $30.00 a prescription for my Vicodin based on 120 count which is a monthly thing for me.

Dave, I get my Vicodin via mail service. But I'm on the Tricare 4 Life mail order system, maybe that's why.

I don't know about workers comp but for our regular RX's we've had them filled all over the country. That includes first time fills and also refills. The RX's are written by a Kansas doctor. We have had them filled in Michigan, too. In our case we just need to make sure the pharmacy participates with Blue Cross so we get insurance coverage. So far I've yet to find a Walmart pharmacy or Walgreen's that does not take our insurance. I've not tried Costco as we're not members.
We've had RX's transferred between Walmarts, between Walgreen's, and back and forth between both of them. It's not been a problem at all for us. W/C might be a wrinkle I'm not familiar with, though.

I might be able to transfer between Walgreens. My WC Rxs are 100% paid for by the WC company - $0 for me. We had to specifically set up an WC acct at local Walgreens for these Rxs. I will have to call my WC lady and see if I can access this account at any Walgreen. I know each state's WC laws are different, but I suspect that it can be done...
Our other Rxs are mail in with a $2 copay (BX/BS) and a 90 day Rx. I wouldn't think they would be a problem shipping to an out of state location, as they (Medco) are based in Minneapolis (I think...) themselves anyway.

Dave, if it's with BCBS, then you can go to any pharmacy in any state that participates with the BCBS in their states. The BCBS plans cooperate through the ITS system to make sure you get the coverage you signed up for in your state, no matter where you are. So long as the pharmacy participates with BC.
Occasionally a pharmacy looks at my card and sees the Prime Therapeutic and say their BCBS uses Medco or other service. I tell them it does not matter, so long as they participate with BC. Just run it through and they'll see. And they do. That's only been questioned maybe twice. Usually they just run it through and we're good. In case you're wondering, I retired from BCBS and was involved in development and installation of the ITS system.

Thanks, Steve! Then if I am in NC and I call my doctor up here in N. MI and have him call in the Rx to a local Walgreens here in N. MI, he can tell them that I am going to fill this Rx in another Walgreens in NC? Or can he just call a NC Walgreens?
*On Edit~ I am on BX/BS MESSA (teacher's) of MI - except for the WC, which pays 100% of Rxs and doctors visits and surgeries related to my permanently torn rotator cuff.

That was good info. We will probably have to change medical insurance when we start full timing. We have Kaiser now through CalPERS (California Public Employee Retirement System). But Kaiser is not nationwide. Some of my RX's are really expensive (like $400 per refill) and I only pay $5 to $15. We can switch to BCBS but it is more expensive. My entire bill for my heart attack and Stent procedure was a little over $80,000 and I had to pay $12.

Dave, we have them call the RX to the pharmacy where we are going to have it filled, regardless of what state that is. When it's time for a refill of the same RX, we just take it in and tell them "this needs to be transferred." Sometimes they transfer by computer, sometimes by phone. Usually they say to give them 30 minutes to get it transferred and filled, assuming the other pharmacy they call is open (time zone differences.). We've even had Walgreen call Walmart, and vice-versa, to transfer the Rx.

You might want to do some checking. I heard on evening news today that doctors are now allowed to write prescriptions for these type drugs for 90 days instead of the previous standard 30 days.
