Ours will read for about a mile or so away from the rig, I believe if you lose a sensor, the monitor will flash and sound an alarm, at least it does when the batteries are low (I don't know for sure). If you e-mail them with your concerns, they are very prompt and courteous with their replies. Probably better to hear it from the horses mouth!
