Ceiling A/C Register Cover

Can someone tell me how to safely remove the round ceiling A/C register cover? I see a small piece of loose plastic inside the cover. Probably a scrap that wasn't removed when installed. I just don't want to try to remove it and damage the cover. Should it be pried off or is there another technique?

As you look up at it you will see three tabs. Use a small screwdriver and gently work each off and the cover will come off. The tabs are holding on to a sleeve so they can rotate. The sleeve it is attached to will then be exposed. While you are in there you might want to do what many of us have done and cut the sleeve off so it doesn't obstruct the ductwork. The sleeve is held on with screws. Some of us have also cut everyother fin off the cover for more air flow.

I pulled all mine off by just putting my fingers behind the cover and pulling a little around the edges and they came off real easy. As Dick said you can cut every other fin or change the registers for one that is already more opened up and directs the air more downward.

Or you can leave them off until the heat waves pass. Makes a huge difference in air flow.
