Bears

Yesterday I came downstairs about 6:30 and walked over to out sliding glass door in the front of our house and there not 3 feet away from me was a bear just standing on the deck. He had already emptied the bird feeders. Then he headed over to the hummingbird feeder and emptied it. He just stood there and drank the sugar water. He came back last night for another late night snack. This time there was a little surprise for him. Turned out to be a shocking experience. I had an electric fence changer hooked to the bird feeder. He wasn’t nearly as hungry as he thought.
Bears are common here in western Va now. 30 years ago there was a few but now a real problem. You best not leave anything they would think was something to eat in the back of your truck. I keep a fence changer on the trash can.
Does anybody else have a problem with them?

I have not encountered any bears or other wildlife but I would think it is common sense not to leave food or trash out for them to investigate. AKA please do not feed the animals.

Yes you don’t leave anything out they will eat but it’s hard not to. The trash truck comes once a week and if you feed the birds. It’s hard not to leave something out they will eat. We had honey bees, they love honey. You put an electric fence around the hives. Put 5 wires about 6 inches apart 3 hot wires and 2 ground wires. Eve then they will try to dig under the bottom hot wire.

There were videos and pictures posted last week of a black bear about 30 miles north of us (near Bells,TX), far from their closest normal range. Deer are becoming more common around here where they have not been in many many years. Guess increasing animal populations and reduced hunting pressure are pushing them back into areas they had been pushed out of years ago.

This time of year the 2 year old males are being sent away from momma by the bigger bears. Just had one killed by a car on the road in front of the house. Deer are always around. So are the darn copperheads moving this time of year. The biggest problem is people feeding the gators. The is NOT a rural area of coastal NC....

Like John said these are young bears. Mom kicked then out and they are hungry. Just looking for something to eat so you teach them your house isn’t a good place to find a free meal. You put up an electric fence. They will get shocked a few times and find a meal somewhere else.

Was an article this weekend in RV Travel that a park (hiking mostly) is currently closed in British Columbia because one or more bears are breaking into cars to get the food folks left in coolers on the seats.
