Thin Moon Monday Evening

If it's clear where you are on Monday evening, try looking for the thin one day old moon about 10 degrees up almost due west at sunset or just after. It will be a pretty crescent and only about 23 hours old and just over 12 degrees from the sun. Might be a bit difficult to sweep up naked eye at sunset but keep looking. Binoculars will help. It will be about 1% illuminated and may look something like this image I took from the backyard about 10 years ago.

Every time I look at the moon, I think back to sitting in our engineering conference room with an old boss and his friend, Harrison "jack" schmidt, Apollo astronaut as he related his trip and walking on the moon. How cool that must have been to be able to hop around and look back to see the earth.

If anyone gets a good look, let me know where you were when you spotted it and what time (time of first acquisition). Also, how long were you able to hold it (follow down to horizon). It gets easier to see the darker it gets (sun lower) but extinction becomes a factor (we're looking through more air). But you might want to just enjoy the view and not care about details. It should be a very thin and pretty thin moon.

I acquired the somewhat difficult moon just b4 it dropped behind a distant tree - 8:12pm from near Lake Conroe, Tx. It was difficult to locate until I used Venus as a reference and a pair of 8x35 binoculars. The arc of illumination appeared to be just over 90 degrees running from 3 o'clock to 6:30 - very much like the image above. There seemed to be a haze in the atmosphere. This moon observation was more difficult than I had considered it would be. Often, a one day old moon with a separation of 12+ degrees is visible naked eye. Neither I or Joy were able to pick it out of the sky without binoculars.

Moon Data
altitude: 5.1d
azimuth: 278
age: 23h 14m
separation from sun: 12.6d
time from sunset to moonset: 50m
phase: 0.0138
sun 5.3d below horizon

Were you able to spot it tonight? I was think your post was referring to difficulty in seeing the thin crescent in my image sometime Sunday
