Gators ~~ Gators move in search of a mate or food. Often they move on a wet, warm night and stay a while. Last summer a neighbor called wildlife about "a big gator" near her patio. Two officers arrived and did not see the gator. A pebble was tossed in the pond and a 4 1/2' male arrived quickly. That indicated the woman was feeding them, which is illegal in NC. He told her he would arrest her if it continued. While all this was going on the 6 1/2' momma and 14 babies were 45 yards away watching. NC wildlife moves gators under 6' far away and larger ones are euthanized, mostly to protect the officers removing them. Some civilians are licensed to remove them as well. On one of the thumb drives I have some pictures. When I get home I'll try to locate them. At times there will be 1 or 2 gators in the pond and at other times none. There is a female mallard we call hoppy. A gator saw her as lunch one day ~~ got her by the leg, she got away and does fine on 1 leg. Easy to know when gators are there as the ducks spend little time on the water, a lot more time when there are none here.

We have had a pretty large population of turkeys (50-60)wandering the neighborhood as well as a small 'herd' of deer. We have lived here for 25 years and have counted 29 different birds plus horned owls and a bald eagle pair, a fisher family, skunks, coy dogs, a couple 'possums and red foxes. A couple years ago a black bear and a young moose wandered through. Unfortunately, the woods behind us was sold to a pillage the land developer and much of the land cleared and some McMansions built. These 'houses' were purchased by folks that appear to have no feel or need for wildlife and preservation so our wildlife population has dwindled

We put up a trail camera in the back yard to keep an eye on a trespassing neighbor. The neighbor problem soon resolved but we keep the camera up to watch the wildlife; deer, javalina, coyote, coon, bobcat, lots of birds. We are close to National Forest land even within the city limits. Lots more interesting than our neighbor.

So I'm looking around my image files for other backyard sightings. We all have these little bastards. They were in one of the boat storage bays. It was very hot that summer.

And some have deer. We had a pair born inside fenced property and were raised inside for several months. Think this was dad.

And Hope & Love. Had to give them names.

In the Fall beginning in late August, we have the big Ruby throated migration to Mexico. We have been one of their stopping points since moving here in 1999.

I'm starting to move a bit out of my backyard now but still in the neighbor hood. One of our astronomy clubs runs an observatory at Brazos Bend State Park. The park is full of alligators so when we leave the observatory at all hours of the night we have to be watchful. The path to the parking lot crosses a swamp and meanders through the woods. It is not unusual to have a resting gator, day or night, laying across the path. Many years ago we were taking a visitor/speaker from Hawaii down to the park to show him the facility. We also took him to see Hildegarde, our 14' Momma and her babies. He got a bit close and she hissed at him in a way that is a big time warning. She disappeared after tropical storm Allison in 2001.
Moving farther away from our backyard, Joy's Mom lived in Navarre, Florida and was told not to keep feeding the bears. She never paid attention to the game wardens. She sighted them often, yes even cubs, in her backyard. She snapped this portrait while the big boy was in the act!
