Semi Trailer on Old Route 66 in AZ

We were day tripping thru Oatman on towards Kingman the other day on old Route 66. Once in the mountains south of Kingman, we came upon a northbound semi chugging it out hairpin turn after hairpin turn. He got to a place able to pull over and motioned us bye. We stopped and asked thru the window what he was doing on Old 66 ... he replied in broken English, " GPS ... no do this ever again". Guess he didn't read the no trailers over 40' sign. Once thru the mountains, we waited a bit out of concern ... he came chugging on thru 15 minutes later.

We see this all the time. We live on a little one lane country road. It’s clearly marked no tractor trailers, turn around, last chance but it doesn’t matter. It’s steep hill and hair pin curves that’s hard to get pickup around. They get stuck because there isn’t enough room to get a truck around and then here comes a wrecker to get them out. Can’t you read! It’s funny. Bet they don’t try but once.

After finding13" of snow on top of ice on Wolfe Creek Pass in June one year I became a big fan of interstate highways.

The trucking industry wants another 260,000 trucks on the road!! That is insane! There are too many trucks on the road now. Coming down I-5 in California with 2 lanes, you have to stay in passing lane most of the time. Also the rest stops are overflowing with truckers and are parked on the off ramp and exit because there isn't room for them. More trucks will make it more dangerous and convenient for travel all over the country. This request should be denied and put a limit to the number even it slows delivery time.

Trucks carry almost every thing we use. I sat in a Cracker Barrel restaurant for a half hour last Monday and counted Fed Ex trucks on I81 there was 26. So what trucks do we wont to get off the road? Not the ones that carry the goods I need.

They are not asking for more trucks, what they are saying is there is a driver shortage and they will need that many more drivers.

The trucking industry does not need to or have to to ask anyone if they can add more tucks to their fleets. You have to remember everything you buy was delivered by a truck. So fewer trucks less deliveries leading to shortages at the stores.

Then everyone will be complaining about that.

Can’t wait. I’ve been driving for over 50 years without a wreck but I’m sure they will be a lot safer.

I am the owner of a small trucking company. The present problem is not needing more trucks. We need more drivers. I noticed on an OOIDA radio broadcast recently that do to excessive government regulations, etc., the average span of employment for a new truck driver is only abut 2 years before the driver quits. Excessive regulations, including the new ELD requirement, continually add costs and create more problems for the industry, companies, shippers and drivers. The shortage of drivers is resulting in some trucking companies offering sign-on bonuses of up to $5,000 for new hires, along with higher pay for drivers to stay more than a year.

If you have it, a truck hauled it. A truck has to deliver it before you can buy it.

I feel that another cause in the increase of trucks on the road is "Just In Time" shipments. Manufacturers realized that it is cheaper to have their product on truckers trailers than to have a warehouse.

Waiting for Driverless RVs, we can party on, arrive rested, fed, and if need tell the RV to drive around the block and pick us up in 5 minutes.

Lynwood, we just had a fatality down here in Tucson because a driverless car hit a lady walking across the street with her bike. I think they need more experimenting and on the road testing before letting them out on our highways especially without an onboard driver/rider!

you know why driverless cars will be safer? They will accept the same voice commands as our GPS'. you know how far that gets you.

Driverless cars and trucks have to be universally accepted or they won't work. Imagine combining human drivers with self-driving vehicles in larger numbers... self driving cars obey speed limits, humans do not, self driving cars do not cut in front of you in traffic, humans do. self driving cars do not tailgate, humans do. self driving cars do not road rage, humans do. Self-driving vehicles have algorithms that prevent them from driving like real humans do.....

So imagine a traffic situation with self driving cars mixed into the fray... they will be constantly slowing down to respace themselves out from traffic, after being cut off and the human jams on the brakes in disgust that the self driving car is impeding the humans agonizing progress... the self-driving car or vehichle does not road rage back it simply slows down because that is what it's driving algorithm tells it to do. Now more humans behind get frustrated. Traffic jams and accidents are going to go up before they go down. The toll of victims will cause a huge stink that politicians will mandate rules and fines all over the place. Not a good situation.

Self-driving vehicles... It all sounds good, but we are a long way from making them work efficiently in concert with real humans. I won't hold my breath.
