Anyone ever extend their front jacks with the hand
As the 40 amp fuse thread has indicated not only do the 40 amp fuses to the front jacks blow out but, they are VERY VERY hard to find. If you blow a fuse somewhere where there isn’t a Montana dealer you simply are not going to find a 40 amp fuse. I blew two fuses in one day while lifting the Montana to hitch height. (Note to self: untighten the JT Stabilizers before extending the jacks). We are currently in Flagstaff, there isn't a Montana or even a Keystone dealer he in town. I have been to every RV dealer, RV repair and RV supply store and no one has 40 amp fuses.
This has made we wonder is it really possible for a mere mortal to extend the jacks with the hand crank or does it take super-human strength?

Grant, I have found the 40 amp fuse at NAPA auto parts, but you are correct they are hard to find.

Thanks Bob I will give the next NAPA store I see a try. I have tried Auto Zone, Kragen, a no name auto parts store and Radio Shack with no luck.

A mere mortal can, indeed, extend the legs by hand. However it takes a long time! The turning is not hard but it takes a lot of turns to make the legs go down. It takes more endurance than force. Don't ask me how I know!

I have done it too, not really too bad, but not something I would want to do everyday. Maybe with a cordless drill and suitable adapter???

Grant,
Back five years ago, our motor burned out and we had to extend and retract the legs by hand a couple times until I could get another motor. It's not bad but as others have said, it takes a long time. The gearing ratio is such that it's not hard to turn but just takes a lot of turns!

I just wanted to know, if I run out of fuses would I be stuck somewhere until I found more fuses. Nice to know that I would be able to get back on the road.
I went a year before I popped the first 1 and now I have popped 3 in 2 months. Hope I am done for awhile. :-)

I have to say if it were me and the choices were crank by hand or bypass the fuse, then I would be bypassing the fuse holder till I could find another fuse. I would not let a blown fuse keep me from operating a perfectly fine electric motor that I know will work with a new fuse. If the motor had issues, that might be a different story.
You could probably jam the jack handle into the fuse holder to get power back.

Don't give up on fuses...I've found them is several auto parts stores. When you find a store that carries them, buy a half dozen.

I'm wondering why they don't use a Stud Style Auto Reset 40 Amp Circuit Breaker for $2-$3 each. Even a manual one would be good as then you can search for the problem of the breaker tripping then manually reset it with the push of a button.
Might be a good mod.

They don't use them because they cost way more than the fuse they use..FYI.. A 30 amp fuse will work just fine. In fact any Montana MAY have a 30 amp fuse in it..who knows.. I am not saying to keep a 30 amp fuse in the ckt but it will work if you blow a fuse and do not have a spare 40amp..

Rich, my 2955RL 2007 will take a 30 amp fuse and raise the pads with no problem, but when trying to lower them once weight is on them, it only move about 1/4 inch and poof the 30amp fuse is gone. 40 amp was in it and that is what works on mine. When my 40amp went out on the last trip, I had 5 30amp fuses, tried them so I know when I can use a 30 amp and when I need the 40amp. Some units may be able to use the 30amp.
My 40 amp went because I stopped and restarted lowering the pads with load too quickly.

Did it a few years ago with our SOB. Not difficult, just time consuming. There are pretty good gears in those hand cranks, lots of mechanical advantage. When you find the fuse, buy a few extras, just in case.

When we first got ours the dealers shop man just bypassed the fuse to operate.

drjjj If you follow the red wire from the landing gear motor the fuse is in line in that wire. On mine its in a black case that you need to open the top of to see or change the fuse. Mine uses a 40amp (standard) buss fuse as compared with a muni buss or mega buss fuse.

Why not make an extended tool for your battery powered drill & use that in an emergency?

Our 2008 3000RK came new with a 35 amp fuse installed, it blew the day we brought the new unit home from the dealer. Had to crank it to get unhooked; the local car parts place in Fairhope had plenty of 35 amp fuses, I used a box on our first trip out. Took the 5th wheel back to the dealer where purchased with a list of discrepancies one of which was the fuse problem. They installed a automatic reset breaker, they said that was recommended by Keystone. No problems since.

My 06 3400 came with a 30amp fuse and it worked just fine. I saw post here about 30 amp/40 amp fuses so we checked saw we had a 30 amp..asked our dealer what should be in there and they said 40amp..so I put one in..never blew the 30amp.I guess some of us got one that will work with either size fuse...go figure????
