If you place the slideout so that it is part way open you can then put a crescent wrench on the square tube and turn the tube slightly back and forth and the bolt will come right out and the new one will slide right in.

8.1al,

You said exactly what I was going to say!

Folks, the job is somewhat easier if the room is NOT sealed in either direction. Take it in or out away from the seal. Replace the bolt first at the passive end. Then, the one at the drive end.

MIMF2,
You are a good guy, I have heard nothing but kind words about you, for all you have done for the group.
I understand you travelled quite a way to meet, and work on some units for the members on one occasion, even got caught in an ice an snow storm on the way back.
We appreciate you being there for us. I hope to meet you some day.

Here's a link to a picture of one of the slide bolts that Glen replaced. It's the one to the rear of our dining room slide, curbside. He said that he had to cut off the bolt only on the front of that same slide so that it wouldn't hit the hydraulic arm. Not everyone will necessarily have to do that.

Steve, Glen's hint is to change your bolts if they are the short ones. You can tell if you have the short ones if the smooth part of the bolt isn't visible on both sides of the holes. He put in stainless steel bolts. Our expert (Charlie) said that they're almost as hard as #8's and they don't rust. And we have PRETTY bolts.

Our other bolt....

Yes, I see your bolts are pretty. You should put them on your rally show and tell list!

Ours should have the longer ones but our 2003 had the shorter ones. I tried to change them but they were a bear. But now I see I should have moved the slides to inbetween fully extended and fully retracted and it would have been easier. I could not get a crescent to budge that square tube the way I tried to do it. So I gave up and figured I'd replace them if and when one broke. Which, of course, it did as we were trying to leave an RV Park and hit the road on a Sunday morning in Moab, UT, when nothing is open. Fortunately I had the spares...

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Well, we could add our pretty bolts to the Show and Tell at the rally since most of the time you guys spend that time on the ground looking up at the underside of a Montana anyway. I won't be any more specific in my description of their posture, but most of the gals know what I'm talking about.....
