Strip and Paint

I am getting interested in getting my 10 year old Montana fully stripped and painted. I talked to a fellow Montana owner from CA this summer who had his stripped but not painted. If I remember--he paid $1000 for the full removal of all decals. I plan on talking to a RV dealer who had done very good work for me what he would charge--they have a full paint booth that can hold motor homes and 5th wheels.
Basically--cheaper than a newer or new Monty and new truck!

Think that guy was also taken to the cleaners (besides strippers!). Get a gallon or two of this: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00S8N2M...I1PEYHODNJ3K02 and spend a day or two - all the decals will be gone.

As for paint; the only color I'd consider would be white (or maybe slightly off-white) and anyplace that paints semis should be able to do it.

A couple of days with patience, plastic scrapers, and a heat gun is way cheaper than $1000.00 Be sitting down when they quote a price for a full body paint even if it is white or oyster. Ya know what they say ... "you can buy your old horse a new blanket, but there's still an old horse underneath". I'd look around for a slightly newer fiver that's depreciation from new has already been absorbed by it's first owner and keep your truck.

Removing the decals is not really a big issue. There are many different ways to remove then. It will be time consuming regardless of which way you decide to go.
Be sure to be sitting down when they quote you a price for the paint job. Depending upon the colors and type of striping you want, the price will probably cost between 10 - 15k.
As Dieselguy noted, your most echonomical solution would be to upgrade to a newer unit.

I would just love the old monte, warts and all. On a car, color doesn't matter because all of the windows create enough heat issues that paint doesn't matter. Been seeing those rv's with pretty paint and three or more ac units? John

With bad shoulders and rotator cuff issue--all the easy solutions are not really easy for me. I would rather save my shoulders for golf. So, I will keep looking and getting ideas.

Don't know about that stripper that Walt mentioned, but you could not pay me $1000 to remove all the decals from someone's trailer using an eraser wheel and scraper. I removed and replaced just the front and rear on mine and that was more than enough for me. Putting the new ones on wasn't too bad. Getting the old ones off was a real bear.

IMO it would be well worth the $$ to completely upgrade your 2006 rather than purchase a new one We should have done that.

Member Larry (embraceatrend) posted about painting his rig some time ago. I haven't seen him on here recently but you might try emailing him. If that doesn't work, he has a friend who does still visit. I will dig up up his name for you.

Meanwhile here is his posting with pictures. It really looks good. The only catch is it was done in Mexico. But Puerto Penasco is a great place to visit.

Besides removing the decals, to do it right, you would also need to remove all the silicone caulking next to the surfaces you would be painting, otherwise, the paint won't stick, and you would just need to do it over once the paint peeled. There is a lot more involved to paint these rigs than the decal removal.

In Red Bay,Alabama there's a former Allegro Motor home body guy that does body work and paints. Cost is ~ 10K depending on how many colors and a few other things. I've seen his work and it is as good as any RV full paint I've seen. Don't know if that includes taking decals off.

Two winters ago our rig sat next to a similar rig with full body paint. Their AC normally came on 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours before ours did and ran for at least an hour at the end of the day when ours shut off.
