Campground near Kent, Washington

We will be traveling to Kent in August and have never been in the area.
Any recommendations for a week long stay with full services?
Or any places we want to avoid????

Thanks,

Reviews at the local KOA are not so good.
Also, wondering if the Washington State fairground would be a better choice?

We are planning on spending 2 months out there next summer as our youngest daughter and son-in-law live in Kent - and they are about to have their first child. While visiting a couple of weeks ago, we looked at campgrounds near by and were very disappointed. We ended up making a reservation at Tall Chief RV Resort. It is about 30 minutes from Seattle and about 50 from Kent. It is NOT full hookup however (no sewer) and most of the sites are only 30 amp. We're planning on trying to survive on one AC at a time while there and bringing along our blue tote. There is a dump station on the property. It is very wooded there with some privacy from others. The remaining campgrounds that were reasonably close to Kent/Seattle were all pretty rough looking from what we tend to prefer. Many seemed more like parking lots with trailers on top of each other so your awning would provide shade for your neighbor's slides. If you find something you like, please let us know.

Good luck on finding parks near Seattle. There are few to chose from. The KOA is the only one I know of in Kent, it located in the industrial area.

Thank you for your replies.

Yeah, the seem to be slim pickins around Kent, WA.

BandBmalin,
during your looking around did you happen to check out:

Lake Sawyer Resort?
Their LS Premium sites: (The 'best' sites)
Rates From $365.61 USD
These sites are either pull thrus or back ins. They are all full hookups. They all have 30 amp elec. These sites either have views, are large in size or are an end/corner site. There is Wi-Fi access available at most sites.
Premium
Extra Lg Yard
Full Hook-up
WI-FI

Still only 30 amp but at least Full Hook-ups...
23 mi from downtown Kent.

Arkware, we didn't look there. I just pulled up a satellite view on google maps and I hope I'm wrong, but it looks a bit like most of the parks we saw and drove to/around during our last visit to the area. Most of what we saw showed the RVs pretty much packed in like sardines. I'm all for being social, but that is a bit too social for my taste. I may be wrong because it sounds good on paper, but I get nervous when they don't have many gallery pics of the campground with RVs and instead show lots of scenery instead. Just our personal taste.

We looked at Issaquah Village RV Park and one called Blue Sky. Blue Sky was better, but still too sardine-like for us. The KOA looked rough too. We were quite discouraged and about to toss our plans to tow from Florida to Seattle until we found Tall Chief. If you're good with staying out a couple of hours from Seattle/Kent, we saw some better options, but we wanted to be reasonably close to Kent so we could spend time with the new grandchild. (...and the kids too!)

Seattle is *NOT* RV friendly!!!! There are two options. If you want to play in the north side of Seattle then Lake Pleasant is the place for you. On the south side, the KOA in Kent is the other option. It isn't a great park, but how much time will you really be spending there?

The other consideration is traffic. After L.A., Seattle has the worst traffic in the country. Figure and hour to an hour and a half to get into Kent from the burbs. Rush hours runs from 4 AM to 10 PM. I highly recommend you bite the bullet and stay at the KOA.

P.S. My kids live in Seattle on the north side and I visit there 5-6 times a year. The traffic is something to be seen and experience.

Thanks to you both for your insightful advice.
We're excited to travel to new areas, but not looking forward to major metro insanity.

Safe travels,

Totally agree! I have to go to Seattle area for work more often than I like (once a year is too often in my opinion) I HATE driving around Seattle. Portland is getting bad but Seattle is just gross...especially I-405.

If I had to choose between a nicer park in the Seattle area or a lesser park that avoided Seattle traffic I would take the latter...no doubt.

Tumwater, south of Olympia has Heritage Campground, up the road in Lacey is "Lost Lake" with possible leases from private owners, Land Yacht Club (Drive In theater style) and Puyallup State Fairgrounds (September is Fair time). Most are a good hours' drive from Kent on a good day. Military/DOD affiliation campgrounds at Joint Base Lewis McChord.

Thanks to all for their input

We've decided to go with the Puyallup State Fairgrounds.
Full service 50 amp for $32.00 a night.
If we decide we don't want to chance the dually in the traffic, the commuter trains are close by that can take us to Kent and Seattle.

I'll report back with our experience there.

You should be OK since you are staying south of Seattle. The traffic can still bunch up during normal rush hours but it moves right along through the middle of the day between there and Kent.

We have stayed multiple times at South Prairie Creek RV Park while visiting the Sound area. May not have any slots available but it would be very convenient to Kent except for early morning commute

Arkware, please do share back your experience. We are in the area often (me on business, wife to visit kids and soon to be grandkid) so are very interested in the Kent area since that is where they live. (Just got home last night actually after having meetings on Friday...)

We stay at Lake Sawyer. When you leave Lake Sawyer it is a straight 20-30 minute shot to Kent, never had a problem with traffic. Family in Maple Valley, Kent and Renton, works well. Fred Meyer, Costco, entertainment and resturants close by.
Look up camp map. As you enter, sites on left are full utilities, right side water, ele only. Sats best at full sites or the grassy sites at end by fence on right. The lake and playground are good features there. Have fun.

We have lived in the Kent area for 20+ years before we retired. I would choose the Lake Sawyer campground. The KOA is not a good choice. Traffic from Puyallup to Kent is quite heavy from 7am to about 11am. traffic from Lake Sawyer to anywhere in Kent is manageable.

Puyallup State Fairgrounds, Washington

All,
We stayed a week at the Puyallup State Fairgrounds. The sites are much like the fairgrounds in Goshen. All grass sites and NO mats allowed!
All utilities in the rear with rigs parked back to back.
NOTE: extra long sewer hose!
It was not busy while we were there so there was extra space between the rigs.
I was a bit surprised (and pleased) at how quiet it was. Quiet neighborhood and no trains!
The only negative we had was that there was no wifi.
The camp host, self described 'crazy cat lady', was friendly tho a bit of a 'speed nazi'. Just go 'dead slow' in the campground.

This is a very good option for the area.
