Using built in generator prep wiring for external generator

Our new unit is prewired for an onboard generator but we are not going to install one. Instead we are going to buy a welder/generator (because I can weld and I want the welder) that will sit in the bed of our truck in front of the 5th wheel hitch.

Can I simply tie onto the wiring in the generator compartment and run it up to the hitch where it would only take a very short cord to jump to the generator? If this is possible it would make wiring a lot easier and running on gen. would be a lot easier to do on the road compared to running a very long cord from the front of the trailer to the rear.

The transfer switch doesn't care if the generator is installed in the front storage compartment or somewhere outside. Many here have added a plug to the front wall and connected it to the transfer switch. That way if the park's shore power station is closer to the front than the rear, you can plug the umbilical cord there. When boondocking, you can use the same plug and umbilical (with appropriate adapter plugs) to connect the external generator.

Be sure to use the appropriate wire size from the transfer switch to the external receptacle based on the maximum expected voltage. Getting #6 wire out through the pin box will be a challenge. Add a plug to front wall and be done with it.

I agree that a plug on the front wall makes it an easier install BUT if you go to the trouble of running thru pin box you could use the generator while running down the highway if you wanted too......considering that our fridge is a residential that might be a factor on long hauls not to mention it is nice to precool the unit on those really hot days.
