DEF

How many miles are you getting to a tank of DEF on your 2017 Ford Superduty. I have 5800 kilometers (3600 miles) on my truck now and have gone through two 9.45 litre (2.5 gallon ) jugs already. The gauge is now sitting at 5/8 of a tank. I'm in the Yukon right now and had stopped at the Ford dealership in Whitehorse and was told that is normal usage for towing my Montana. I don't believe that this is normal usage having to fill the DEF and checking the fuel. What do you 2017 Ford owners think?

I have a 2013 ram. The def with out a doubt will drain fast when you are towing. and hardly not at all when you are not. in 4000 miles i will use 5 gallons of the stuff so it sounds to me its working normal.

My 6.7 PSD is a 2012 but I don't think there is much difference from the 2017 when comes to DEF. I don't feel that 5 gallons in 3600 miles is excessive while towing anything as heavy as a Montana. On the other hand, mine only "sips" it when not towing.

On edit do I see that you still have 5/8 tank left of that 5 gallons?

My best estimate for DEF useage when towing is about 500-600 miles per gallon of DEF. When not towing--about 800-900 miles per gallon. Looks like you are doing about as expected from my experience with the 6.7 diesel.

I have a 2017 F250, mix of towing camper, boats, and unloaded highway and city. I have about 5000 miles on this DEF fill up and have 1/4 tank of DEF left according to gauge as I just checked it after my tow this weekend. Never calculated DEF to miles or gallons of diesel, only have about 14,000 miles on it.

This is good info for me since we just purchased a new 2016. We have only 3300 miles on it and have not refilled the DEF yet. The truck has done three regens that I know of, possibly a few others that I missed. I'll be carrying a bottle of DEF with me on my next trip.

Thanks guys.

I check my DEF tank level periodically--really no schedule. Since DEF is available in many places, I don't carry any when I travel. I add 2.5 gallons when the gauge is below 1/2 of a tank. Works for our travels. This has worked for me for the past 5 years.

I do much the same as TimandSusan. My 2015 doesn't have the gauge but an information screen which shows "OK (i.e full)" "< 1/2" and then warnings for 800, 500 miles and less to go before empty. I too just check periodically and when it says it is below 1/2 full, I add a 2.5 gallon jug.

I get 2,000 to 3,000 miles per 2.5 gallon fills when towing (much more when not). I don't carry a spare as it is pretty much available everywhere today and it doesn't like being exposed to high temperatures.

I get around 1000 miles to the gallon pulling the Montana at about 14,000#. I don't carry any as it can be found almost everywhere. Nice and cheap at the pump at Flying J / Pilot.

I don't care how many miles I get out of the DEF. it's cheap and is available anywhere. When it gets to half full I just refill it.

I have the same truck. The amount I have used is in line with what others are saying. Towing uses about twice as much DEF as just running around empty. I have been told by other Ford users that it will improve some as the engine gets more miles on it.

I guess that I was used to my 2011 GMC that I had before the Ford as it used hardly any DEF at all. I would use 5 gallons a year. The good news is that my Ford F350 started using less DEF on my return trip back home from The Yukon and Alaska.

We were coming back from Florida last season and the DEF was getting low. We went to a truck stop and they didn't have it at the pump and the stuff in the store had no long nozzle so Hubby didn't want it. We went to Walmart and they were out of it! So we carry a jug or two on long trips just in case we get stuck like that again.

Prefer at the pump too. Figure it is fresh and less expensive but keep a nozzle from Blue Def in the basement. Just rinse it really well after use. I think it is all the same no matter where it is purchased.

Most DEF systems are designed to operate at around 3% usage, i.e. will use about 3 gallons of DEF for each 100 gals of diesel. That's why you use more DEF when towing, you burn more fuel per mile.

I used to buy 3-4 boxes and store in my basement when I found it on sale, but now that Walmart has it for ~$8 for 2.5 gal jugs, I just buy as needed.

I always carry the Ford long nozzle which I bought from Amazon (Link to nozzle) and use it rather than the cheap, leaky, crap included with the box DEF. Just rinse it out after use and it is good to go for the next time.

2017 F350 CC DRW FX4: 5300 miles with 1200 miles of towing our Montana 3811MS. I have right at a 1/4 tank of DEF left and have only added 2.5 gallons of DEF so far. I want to see how low the dash gauge gets before adding more DEF. That way I'll see what kind of message is displayed and know the computer is working the system properly.

My 2016 GMC 2500HD gets about 4000 miles per 5 gals of DEF. Used to carry extra DEF but we always seem to be passing by a Walmart on our long trips. Info center in truck lets me know when there is 900 miles left in the DEF tank.
