Suspension upgrade started

I would rather be on a flat hard surface, but I am on gravel, makes it harder to work.
I changed out one spring, 3K to 4K on drivers side, did the wet-bolts on that one.
It's hard for me to plan a day, I always get a service call, have to stop, put everything away and leave. At least one is done.

Is there a marking on the new spring to keep the axle lined up or would you just need to measure to find center? Gravel is tuff thats what I have to lay on also, get you a piece of cheep plywood to lay on, might even get a nap in? Ozz I used a small come-a-long to pull my spring over to make up to the wet bolts.

Ha! I cut up all the plywood I had to make the little squares for the supports and pads, shims also.
The C-clamp worked OK, I found that if you hook to the rigid outboard support, the other one is easier to hook to.
The springs have a locater pin-dead center, I checked the measurements, I figured I would put it in back-wards, but it's fool-proof.

Ozz,
I know what you mean about starting a project and having to go on a call. Sometimes, it's tough to get things done.

I use these when working on the ground or anyplace where I need a litle padding. Since they inter lock you can make they any size.

Oh yea, I have them in my shop as well. Mine have tons of holes in them from welding, but are still soft to stand on.

My problem with the gravel is that I have a NASCAR type jack, the bottle jack, 4 jack stands, the 2 rear stabilizers, all need to have pads and flat boards under them. I am running out of plywood to cut up....

Nice job. Excellent step by step pics! I also have gravel as a base to work from. It teaches character.

I used the old one. I only have one spring done so far, maybe tomorrow I will do another.
I had a full thread nut on 3 and almost a full nut on the fourth.
The 3K spring was not as thick as the 4K.

Ozz, you really should consider putting together a step by step do-it-yourself repair manual for the Montana in book form or CD and sell it. Something Keystone doesn't do very well is provide repair manuals.
As many Montana's that are out there - could be a lucrative business especially in the CD format. You could burn copies from any campground you might be holed up in and leave the A/C business to someone else.

A working retirement, why would I not expect anything less?? Can I get a signed copy as a promotional aid (Of course it would have to be a complimentary copy since I am cheap!!)

I am beginning to think the same thing (about the repair manual/owners manual) that it would be nice if it was abit more "model" specific. IE where the water pump is located, etc.

Jim,

Thanks for sharing, I love the way you document every thing. Once picture bothers me, the U-Bolts.

I am not an engineer, but it sticks in my head that a minimum of 3 threads should be showing, but I don't know where it comes from.

exnavydriver ask, "Oz, did you use the new flat u-bolts, or the old ones???"

Not sure what "New Flat U-Bolts" are, but if they longer, I would go with them.

You know the old saying, "There is never time to do it right, but there is always time to do it over".

my experience as a machinist and a Journeyman Pipefitter lets me be comfortable with my nuts...
But thanks for being concerned.
Today when I did the second 4K spring, I got all of them flush, you would gain nothing with more bolt sticking through the nut.
