DEF

Where do you buy your DEF? Auto parts store? Service Stations or truck stops. I have not found any service stations that sell diesel also have a DEF pump--only visited Tx,Az,Nm,Ut,and Co so far.

I've found it at Pilot and Loves at the diesel truck bays. Most of the stations we stopped at had it. Ken

Pilot, Flying J, and Loves all carry at the pump. IF we know we are going to be out in the middle of the world between cities, we will carry a box container of DEF from Walmart or Tractor Supply with us. DEF does not store well in high heat so do not buy it too early and do not keep it in the back of the truck in Summer time where it gets above 100 degrees for very long. Best to fill up at truck stops when you can has they have higher turnover.

As stated above Pilot/Flying Js... Current price nationally at all pumps seems to be $2.799/gal...

Did buy one in a truck stop for $5.59 for a gal jug of DEF. Won't do that again- I'll look for a pump. My 3500HD holds 5.3 gals. As a side note: I was at a flying J and got talking to a Silverado 2500 HD diesel owner. He cautioned me to be careful about stocking up on DEF. It apparently has an expiration date. He bought a case of it and ended up throwing over half of it away...

I was paying $10.00 a gallon when it first started. So $11 or $12 for 2 1/2 gallons is a deal. I heard some of the pumps at truck stops are hard to pump into that little blue fitting without getting DEF all over the engine compartment. Just happy with the boxes.

I found it difficult. Seemed not to have proper venting like the boxes I purchased. Over flowed every time. Thought and still do, that's its something I am not doing right!

Pilot and Flying J also sell the 2 1/2 gal boxes of DEF. Think I paid $11 or so.

The dealerships also are selling it. The Ram shop I was at yesterday was selling DEF for $2.49 a gallon. They would also fill your DEF tank for $10 plus the cost of the fluid used for those who dont want to hassle with it.

My Ford F350 will not hold two of the 2-1/2 gallon jugs unless it is almost completely out. I don't really want to be in a position where I have to scramble to find some, so when the truck tells me that I am under half, I purchase and add a jug. That way I don't risk the DEF tank running over. Not sure if it causes harm, but if you do spill DEF on your vehicle, it looks like salt crystals when it dries on your paint.

Boxes only for me. Local parts store sells 2 1/2 gallons for $11.99.

And yes it is very corrosive. At least that is what I was told at the dealer.

When my 1000 mile warning comes on I add another box. If we are planning a long trip I top off at home. You can tell by the sound when you full as it won't have that tinkle sound.

My 2013 GMC Sierra only tells me when I have 500 miles left. What does that mean??? I have no idea... They needs to have a better gauging system so the driver can constantly monitor the level.

You should be getting an alert at 1000 miles. I, sometimes, am not paying attention when it comes up, but maybe once a week, I scroll through the DIC modes and check if it says anything other than the fluid level is OK. I agree, it would be nice to have a level indicator, but it is what it is. At 10% level, you might have 1/2 gallon left in the tank, which is pretty close to needing two boxes of fluid, too close for me.

Dave, the new Ram's have an actual DEF Gauge and Fuel Gauge that actually tells you the level of fluid you have in each tank. Maybe GM & Ford will follow in the next redesign.

Thanks,Dave. Unfortunatey it will be several years before I buy another truck. I guess I will just have to get the feel of when I need a refill. Kinda like judging when my black tank needs to be emptied...

My 2012 Silverado says nothing until it gets below 17% (I think), which is a strange number in my opinion.

My GMC 3500 DIC said "500 miles left" when I was towing and cycling through my DIC recently. That's the only level indictor I have ever seen... I bought and put in one gal of DEF at that time. I towed from TN to central FL after that and never saw any other notice about it...
