QUESTION ABOUT LIGHTING FIXTURES
I started looking today at track and pendant lighting fixtures to provide some better lighting in our kitchen. I want to go with 12 volt fixtures because they will be an easier replacement/upgrade. On some of the kits I saw today I noticed that they can use either 120V or 12V light bulbs. So excuse my ignorance here, but can I use this type fixture wired into my 12V system using the 12V bulbs and will it work? If so, it looks like there is a wide variety of choices and should be fairly simple. Oh by the way, the bulbs are 50 watt halogen GU10 base but there are lower wattages available. Thanks in advance for your answers.
Jack

As long as you use 12 volt bulbs and the bulbs will fit into the light fixture, you can use any fixture you find. If you accidently put a 120 volt bulb in the fixture, all that will happen will be that the bulb will only shine about 1/10th as bright. No big deal.

I've purchased all new 110 fixtures for our monty (5) and will install them after I pick up the monty next month. In our home, and with some of my customers, we have done fixtures that use the halogen gu10. Frankly, I think there are better ways to do lighting....the 50watt give off a LOT of heat, use a lot of power. Yes, you can get lower wattage, even led's that'll fit the sockets and use only like 1 or 2 watts and be MUCH cooler...but the price of them, wow. I'm still researching for future, but for now the fixtures I bought are NOT gu10 bases. Example....I bought 5 fixtures. If they were gu10 bases, and I bought led bulbs for them, it would've cost me initially way over 100 bucks for the bulbs. Granted, they have a long life span..or do they, when being bounced down the road ? Hey, lots of food for thought, lots of things to consider I guess.
Whatever you decide, post pics when you're done !

Thank you both for your responses and you have answered my question. I know the halogens give off a lot of heat and will use a lot of power. I plan to mount them on the ceiling so I am hoping the heat will not be a big issue. We don't boon dock a lot so we should have plenty of power for the lights. The rig is at the dealer right now for warranty repairs but when I get it back I will have to begin the serious planning and get going on the project. I will post pictures and descriptions when I am done.
Thanks again,
Jack

The new 2010 3400's have 12V pendant lights. You might even be able to get them ordered and installed while the rig is at the dealer.

Jerry,
Thanks for your reply. I have seen photos of the new pendant lights and that's one of the things that got me to thinking about doing the mod. Unfortunately where the current light fixtures are located are not in the right place to get two pendants over the counter. That's why I am looking at different fixtures other than the pendants and I will probably have to do some patching of holes in the ceiling. All of which I would rather do than trusting the dealer to do it to my liking.

Where did you find the 50w GU10 12V bulbs? I was recently searching for 12V gu10's and did not find any on the internet. Thanks

I hadn't looked for them yet....I just assumed that because the lighting fixture box said you could use them that they were available. A quick search of the internet turned up negative results for me too. I will have to look for a fixture that uses a different and available 12v bulb.
