Serious question

Just HOW do you all plan months ahead, reservations made in February for August??

I can barely plan past my first cup of coffee every day.

Seriously, I used to be able to plan a 2 week vacation, 1,500 miles or so, knew every night where I would rest my head.

NOT NOW!!

Secrets??

I assume y'all are retired? If so, why do y'all feel a need to make reservations in advance? We quit making reservations and simply call our intended cg after our noon meal- That way we are reasonably sure we can be there that day and can possibly have an assigned site in case we are going to be late- This has worked for us 99% of the time- Relax and go with the flow- JMHO- Don

Totally agree! . Those who who have not learned this miss seeing what their Maker has in store for them that day! (Otherwise, if something unexpected, interesting and exciting comes into your vision you have the opportunity to attend instead of saying NO! No time! Got to move on. Deadlines! Example? Perhaps a small town rodeo or... An Arabian Horse Show! Or free tickets!!!!)

Saw the Arabian Horse Show. My heart is still going pitter patter. What a thrill!

Yes, retired. Long timing, 5 to 10 months a year on the road.

Our Maker is good to us, he seems to stop us and take us just where we need to be.

I guess I fall back to, he IS the planner, not I!

Ya, that works!

The no planning solution will work well unless you are going to a very popular place in season like the Florida Keys from November to April. I imagine there are other such spots around the country where a boon docking alternative due to lack of a site, is out of the question.

Some of us just can't let the constant planning go after we retire. We get our jobs 9 months or more in advance and plan the time in between as I get time looking at things on the net. Usually I have several plans, sometimes on both ends of the country and when we see where we are and where we may be going we pick one of the plans and flesh it out more. We still try to avoid have to get there this week situations.

Guess there are positives and negatives to planning and making reservations.

Jim & I are retired and most of our travels are 4 - 5 months long. Our children and grandchildren are in NH and Ma. so after 5 months out, I am ready to go back home and see them. Majority of times I do make reservations because of the areas that we are going to. This year we are leaving Maine in June and going to some of the National Parks and then travel down the west coast. (Washington, Oregon and California) Do not plan on returning home to October.

The National Parks are crowded so I do reserve at the parks that I like, to ensure that I get what I want, when I want. If it is in the off season I just check out a few parks that I like and call when I get closer. We are retired military and quite a few of the military campgrounds do not take reservations so we take our chances there too.

I am the planner in our household and Jim is extremely laid back. So we try to find a balance. Always have enjoyed our travels and when we are in a place that we love, always hate to leave no matter how much time we have there.

I do it out of necessity. Can't retire just yet and with only 2 weeks vacation per year, I have to plan carefully. When I do retire, I won't need to plan quite so much.

Unfortunately, it's in my blood and probably should be considered a sickness. I just can't enjoy the day if I don't know where I'm spending the night. Gotta plan!

We just take one day at a time. We know where we are going but not when we will get there.

Carol,
We did ours "on the fly" last summer. Did pick target destinations and parks/CGs for Holiday weekends in season. Had very few problems. "How long should we stay here? Don't know. Let's see!" We changed directions a few times, but still hit everything on our list!

Our plans are always etched in jello, we never hardly know where our next stop will be. Hardly ever a reservation when traveling. May call ahead a couple hrs to see if a CG has spots available. Has always worked for us. On the other hand if we are going to be sitting in one particular place for the winter or a season we try to make reservations.
