Passport America Question
Will finally be on the road February 5th heading to florida. Will take a week to get there (in no hurry) and thinking about joining Passport America. If anyone has it did you have trouble finding campgrounds that accept it (or had a spot available) and were they decient campgrounds. It looks like pretty good savings and there are a lot of campgrounds on the map.

just go to passport american and see what campgrounds are around the area that you will be. we like it. as for campgrounds, some are very limited and poorly maintained and others are like the french quarter RV park (a 5 star) in New Orleans, 2 blocks from the french quarter.

X2. We belong and research the parks on line along our route before we travel. We usually give ourselves several choices depending on how far we may go in a day and what attractions might be around. So far we haven't had any problem finding decent places that accept PA and have room for us.

A week to Florida from New York is no hurry? Looks like about 1150 miles!
We have carried a PA card for 6 years, and it has paid for itself every year. Just make sure you call ahead, and understand the restrictions, because they vary with every RV park.

X3, that's what we try to use when traveling. A lot of time we're just stopping overnite and really hate to pay $30 to $40 for a quick stop over, PassPort works for us. And agree some aren't the greatest while others are top of the line. Only takes a couple nites stay to recoup the cost.

We also have PA for the past 5 years. It pays for itself many times over. I agree that some of the Campgrounds are very nice and some not so. You can look at their website and see what is available, then look up the campgrounds for campers reviews.
Enjoy your time in Florida and safe travels...

I agree with the comments above, some of the camgrounds are very nice, top-notch facilities, and some are pretty run down. We quit the program after we had difficulty finding campgrounds in the area we were travelling, but if you only use it once, it pretty much pays for itself. We are Good Sam junkies now, but it's a nice tool to have when you're travelling like you are.

In addition to what's already been said, we have found that many Passport RV Parks only give the discount on certain days of the week or for a limited number of days. You may need to "work the system" with PA but it is a good deal overall.

Some parks will also let you extend your stay if they aren't busy

It seems to me Passport America in Florida are very few in the snowbird months. They usually do not take PA from Jan. to April. If you look at the PA site at the comments they will tell you if they take it on the months you are traveling. We have not had much luck when we travel to Florida for that reason.

Bill and Cindy-- Not trying to be a smart a-- but if you owned a campground or park(PA or other)in Florida or anywhere else the "Snowbirds" come, would you offer your spots for half price? I know I wouldn't! Prime winter months(Nov.-April)down South are their months to make their money. They get some in the summer but not near what they get in the winter months. I always check the PA book or website for parks around us or in our line of travel and if there is one I'll try and stay there. Even two stays will pay for your years membership and as Charlie said "some of the parks will extend their pricing if they are not real busy and booked up solid! IMHO it is still worth the money to be a PA member!

I totally understand the reasoning behind not offering the discounts. I was just trying to let them know they where going in Feb getting PA discount is probably not going to happen real often. No neg about PA. And agree the discounts are offered in slow times and rightfully so. Sorry if anyone took offense.

I believe the real question has to do with the five day trip down to Florida from New York. I would check the PA web site for open Parks on your way down and pick some in your days end travel time to get off before dark. You may want to call the park direct and I believe the time you are going Feb. they will be happy to make any money they can. You may be able to swing some deals without joining PA.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I just let my membership expire. We never did find a PA park to stay at while traveling. I intended to use it while traveling for overnite stays. But seems like most of the parks are well off the interstate and the 1 or 2 we did find I really didn't wanna stay at. Either that or they only offered discount Mon.thru Thru. or only certain times of the year etc. Besides I would rather pay an extra $15-$20 then have to travel an extra 20 miles to get to a PA park. I use the "We Camp Here" app and look the parks up on RVpark Review. I can usually find a park that is decent in the neighborhood of $30-35 a nite. It works out good cause I can tell the co-pilot to look 50 miles down the road for a decent place and she calls ahead and clicks on the GPS and I am set up relaxing with a cold one and the evening news on the TV in about an hour. I reckon it depends on how far you are willing to go to save a few dollars.

I wouldn't go out of my way either. We are fortunate that there are enough passport parks on the routes we travel to make a good deal for us
