Brake controller question

We currently have a Hayes & Lemmerz Energizer III brake controller that was installed for our previous tag-along. With our new 3475 Monty, I'm wondering if it is suitable or should we upgrade to the often cited Prodigy? Any advice will be appreciated.

Mike,

I'm not familiar with your controller but I can tell you I love the Prodigy controller I upgraded to this past spring.

I also have the Prodigy and am totally pleased. Plug-in install and very easy to setup, and no leveling.

Just this past week, we noticed a code on the display that was intermittent. Turns out I had loosened its plug in the socket under the dash when I was adding a 12V source wire for a lighter receptacle in our console.

I really think that any controller you use should have diagnostics that could potentially save a accident or a life.

Never heard of your controller, but like the others, I have a Prodigy. Very easy to install, and can be had for $100 plus shipping here: http://www.rvwholesalers.com/catalog...hp?mode=search

Prodigy. Why settle for less when you can have the very best.

We also have the Prodigy. Have had others but are extremely happy with the Prodigy over the others we have used.

Make that second best, Bill! I loved the Prodigy in my 2003 but this builtin controller is head and shoulders better. Smoothest controller I've ever used, bar none. I keep wondering when the other mfrs will follow suit.

Mike, I agree with the others the Prodigy is an excellent aftermarket controller. It is proportional and smooth operating. And it works in reverse, too, unlike many others.

I read in blue oval news when ford came out with the built in that it is joint effort between ford and prodigy. So it the (Buit-in) has prodigy written all over it.

I must say that having installed the prodigy a few weeks ago and taking our first trip just last week with it to the coast what a great device and thanks to all of you for your great advice on this product I now feel hat my wife can pull this 3400 and feel safe while useing the brakes I the best feeling is the feeling we can stop at any time if needed the old controller did not respond anything like the prodigy does thanks to all for your input on this great investment for safety

Ken, I read that same thing. I think the guts are prodigy. The difference is it reacts from inputs from the truck's computer rather than a pendulum. So it is extremely smooth with no jerkiness nor banging in the hitch. And, it applies ABS to the trailer brakes, too. But that's not an option for the author of this thread.

Bill, moving to number 1 (29 years worth!) is an UPGRADE, not a downgrade! To others, Bill and I know each other well so this is just a friendly exchange.

I have the Prodigy in my Chevy and just pulled for the first time our new 3475 taking her home from the dealership. Wow, 10000 pounds dry was scary for one who pulled a small TT for years. Was in Dallas in rainy highway traffic and had to slam on the brakes, the truck slowed quickly in part to the Prodigy indicating a 10 on the display (which I think is maximum braking signal to the RV) thd the Allison tranny's engine braking while in TOW/HAUL mode. Question I have is what is the optimum setting dialed in for the Prodigy? I think mine is set at 2 to 2.5.
