Update Hickory Springs Step Recall 15-224

I called local CW store on 3/25. Service to ask warranty manager to order parts.

Today, 4/6, I called to follow up, first I was told the recall was not in the "portal" so no warranty claim could be made. I provided a name and phone number @ Keystone to "get it in the portal".

This afternoon I get a call from CW, it is in the "portal" but now Keystone does not know what the part number is and parts will not be available till 4/16.

The saga continues.........

This whole this is being handled like who is on first, no who is on second, who is on third, no what is on third, and on and on.

It is obvious that someone needs to have a serious Manager meeting @ Keystone.

Jim

I went down to Ace hardware and bought three nuts , bolts, washers cost of $2.90 and replaced the fasteners myself. Not the fist time we have had step problems.

Jim,

Spot on....it is not listed on Keystones website.

When I called the NHTSA after 3 failed attempts with Keystone they took my info and made a complaint. Hopefully these continued calls to NHTSA will light the fire under Keystone.

Our stairs are loose and the rivets are starting to bend so it would be nice to get this fixed before one of us breaks our necks!

Shhhh.....Sue might think this is a plot to get rid of her!

We have been RV'ing since the early '90's. I am going to replace a couple of rivets in my steps maybe tomorrow. Got the flu and just do not care.

The incompetence of Keystone in this issue is beyond belief.

They asked if I had made a service appointment to have them repaired. The dealer says they can not order parts. Now... They they can order parts but Keystone does not know the part numbers, so wait till 4/16.

We are going camping for 6 days April 20. I'll do bolts so I don't fall out a break something.

Hmmm, got a call from our dealer today informing us of a recall on our steps. Because our dealer runs 4 road service vans in the summer they have issued a work order under the road service team. They will be phoning us when in the area and must first come and have a look at our steps to know which parts they are to order. Once they get the parts they will install them on our Montana at it's seasonal site at the lake.

I said thank you very much for being on top of this and we will wait for your call.

If I had a problem with my steps (I don't) THIS is exactly what I would do.

Well interesting calls today.

First, received a call from the NHTSA regarding the recall notice. They had thought the notices were supposed to go out 3 weeks ago but did note Keystone has made 2 addendum to the notice already. They said they would keep on top of Keystone to make sure owners are notified.

Second, I called Keystone again and this time they did identify my VIN is now in the system with an open recall for the stairs. So they said a letter will go our and that I can contact any dealer now that it is the system.

Third, I called Oklahoma RV Center in Moore, OK which we will pass on our way to SD and spoke with Kara who has been in contact with Keystone as well and she plugged it in her computer and our rig came up for the recall. She called Keystone to see about the parts and they told her they would be available by the end of the week. She did forward to me the entire fix procedure that Keystone has posted for them.

Hopefully now we can get this fixed by the end of April when we are in that area.

I just looked on the Keystone site and the 15-224 is still not listed.

Big Boomer can you send what you got for instructions? from your dealer?

I just noticed this thread. Basically, like others...I bought the nuts, bolts and washers that I needed and replaced them. However, I do have one thing to add to this commentary. Computer World and Amazon both sell step stabilizers. I bought one and use it to support my bottom step. It works great. I recommend Leisure Time Marketing 14009 Step Stabilizer or Camping World Catalog Item No. 30984. ...And one more thing. I bought one...but the next time I get close to a CW...I am going to buy another one so that I can support both sides...and not just the middle of the step.

Went to the auto supply store and purchased Two 3/8"X 1 1/2" bolts for the top step and Four 3/8"X 1" bolts for the bottom two steps #8grade hardened and 6 3/8" nuts with the plastic insets (So they can't come off by themselves)and Two 3/8" washers. Job Done. In all
less than $10.00. I think the steps would break before the Bolts do...
Not going to deal with Keystone if I don't have to..........

MP1-- Those step supports/stabilizers did nothing for my wife when the steps twisted and she got thrown out into the yard and broke her wrist. In fact, we had two of the stabilizers under the bottom step and it did nothing to support the step or stabilize it! We're taking the steps to the Fall Rally and the Keystone engineers and those in the know will be inspecting them as to what happened. The recall had been taken care of prior to the accident so it actually did nothing. They(Keystone)sent out another set of steps that are currently being used on the new units and these steps are not much better than the Hickory Springs steps. We'll be talking heavily when we get to the Rally and seeing what they will be doing for us! Watch for developing posts!

Well, for what it's worth, this week our dealer (Curtis Trailers) had us bring in our fiver and they did the repairs per the recall on the steps. We were on our way home from an outing anyway, so we just stopped in, and while they did the repairs, we went to lunch. Curtis has stayed on top of this for us since we first got the recall a few months ago. The problem seemed to be that Keystone first started sending out the repair parts (nuts and bolts, with shims) possibly without Hickory's OK, don't know for sure. Hickory then stopped everything while they researched it. Finally, all the people (read lawyers) agreed on a fix, and Hickory authorized Keystone to proceed. It's all about "risk management" (read CYA) these days. The service manager did tell me that if I had done the repairs myself, then anything that would have happened after that would NOT have been covered, and it would have all been on "me"....! It's done, and I'm happy......now.
