GAS Cards/Rebates
I guess it't time to explore the possibility of a cash back card for fuel or a rebate card of some sort. What can you tell me about it?????
Thanks ahead of time.....

Phil, best I have seen is the 5% cash back like Discover card. So if gas is $5.00 a gallon, and you buy 100 gallons, thats $25 savings. So you pay $475 vs $500. I'd be interested on what else is available.
But I don't want to buy a new Dodge to get $2.99 a gallon gas for 3 years (up to the first 12,000 miles each year) per their new advertisement.

Phil,
I use AmEx Blue with rewards back. One point for one dollar purchased. When you get to 10,000 points you get $100 back. You can get it back in gift certificates at different outlets, or get a $100 AmEx gift card. I'll take the gift card and spend the 100 where I want to.
You can pay your bills using AmEx and just about everything else so the points add up pretty fast. Pay them off when the bills come in to beat the finance costs.

Suggest calling any credit card companies you now hold a card with. Ask em right out, what kind of rebates are you giving.
We are getting like 3% on a Master card, I don't think the bank we have our Discover with offers that 5%. Wish it did! G>G>
BUT, these offers change all the time. We call when we get on the road for a lot of miles with Big Butt and Tana, and ask them, who ever is giving the best deal, that is what we use. We can get cash back on one of our cards, at Walley World, without it being a cash advance. We have not seen a ATM in so long I cannot remember!
Keep calling and asking, use the card that gives you back the most.

One of the problems you create when you apply for these rebate credit cards is that it is another inquiry on your credit record. Every inquiry reduces your magic credit number.
Edit: We use our Discover Card too, but it only does 5% at selected times, like right now we can sign up for the 5% after June 1.

We use the Discover Card as well. During the promotion periods you will get 5% cash back but they will stipulate a "cap" during the promotion period. Will sign up in June for the promotion covering JUL-SEP and see what the cap for gas is. Discover offers an "Open Road" card for gas and auto repair purposes which offers 5% cash back but that is only up to a max of $1200 annually ($100 per month(that is the first $1200 of purchases annually)) 1% cash back after that. Every little bit helps but at todays prices the big rewards are gone before you know it.

We use Associated Bank cc. 5% rebate with max of $300/yr. Rebate is 5% on fuel, groceries, and prescriptions 1% on everything else. Reached the max by May 1 last year so DW got a card and reached that max about Oct 1 so I got another card in my name. I figure with price of diesel we will get the full $900 in rebates this year.
Wayne, if i figure right your Amex is only giving you a 1% rebate. Time to switch cards.

John, You don't have to be an Associated Bank customer to get a CC. Just stop in a bank and get the application. Last May, 2007, when we got back to Washburn I walked into the bank and I didn't recognize a single employee except that I knew them from Washburn. The head teller had gone to be the head teller at the local Bremer Bank and kept her Associated Bank CC. If anyone is interested stop in a local Associated Bank and get a form or email me and I'll see that you get a form. Last I heard they had expanded into Arizona.

Look here for reward cards http://www.creditcards.com/gas-cards.php

Just signed up for the next Discover Card promo that starts in July. Their cap on this promo is the first $400 spent on fuel and/or hotel purchases. The way I see it that's about 3 fill ups at today's prices.....it might only be 2 fill ups come July

We have a Exxon master card the gives us 3% on every gas purchase at a Exxon or Mobil Station. There isn't a cap on the amount of rebates. You get 1% on any other purchase that you put on the card.
We have a Wells Fargo card that we get 1% on every purchase. You can trade 50,000 points in for $600 cash to your account. We also get reward points for using our debit card for purchases at Wells Fargo.
Both credit cards don't charge an annual fee to have them. We pay off our cards each month so we don't have intrest charged on them. Not sure I would use them for the reward points if we couldn't pay them off each month. With diesel/gas prices going up we might have to rethink this retirement thing.
