Trailer to truck electrical connection
I am just wondering how many of us have lost connection of part or all of the plug that we connect to our trailer or how many have blown a fuse that effects our lights/electrical (running with heater on or refrigerator/12v fan)on the road and have not discovered it till something borderline bad has happened. Like defrosted food or got a summons for tail light infraction or had to get in a ice cold trailer because the heater stopped working. I know most of you guys/girls with solar or big banks of batteries probably don't have this problem but us single 12v guys/girls have these problems. I am wondering if there are other guys/girls like me that have had this problem.

The only problem I have had was on a previous trailer. It was raining and I put my running lights on. They would not work. Break lights and turn signals worked, but no running lights. Took a multimeter to the plug and found out no power on that pin from my truck. Stopped into a auto parts store with a large parking lot and purchased a new fuse. all the trailer lights came back on but one. pulled the bulb and found the contacts were corroded from water. This must have shorted and popped my fuse. After replacing the bulb all was good.

8 yrs and no problem yet. Only had to change one brake/turn bulb. But found that while in storage, not on the road.

Never had a problem. Don't run interior lights or heater when traveling and frig is on propane. Avoid night travel, so no running lights, just brake/turn lights. If any circuit between truck and trailer harness was to malfunction I get a warning on the dash computer that there is a problem.

You have to maintain battery voltage to operate your refrigerator even when using propane. That is how I found out I had a disconnect at the truck. I lost refrigerator do to a drain on the trailer battery because the truck was not maintaining the charge and the voltage drop to a point that would not keep the frig running. That happened while all the other electric connections continued to operate perfectly. My truck is a year older then yours and it did not tell me there was a loss of connection. I know the 2011 computer is different then mine so that is a great feature. Does it monitor all trailer circuits.

Good idea to use a little bit of dielectric grease on those trailer plug conductors also a dab on all you bzttery terminals

It does not identify a specific circuit, just that there is a problem in the harness.

No problems so far, even with only one battery. We don't do any night travel, only do 350-400 mile days when traveling, only stop at rv parks for the night. I check my battery water level every month, use only distilled water in it, and take note of any cells that show a different water usage during my checks. The trailer connect cord, when not plugged in, gets its connector covered with a piece of bicycle inner tube and is coiled up and stored inside the back of the pin box which is itself sealed with an aluminum cover. I am surprised that no one has had any of these type problems. I have had my 12 volt supply fuse blow on 2 different ford trucks and have lost connection of the 12 volt supply in the plug once. I am thinking of building a LED light bar that will monitor my plug connection.

18 years ... 4 fivers and one TT. Knock on wood ... never had a power plug issue just one burnt out brake light and one burnt out clearance light. One could travel along time on the battery alone if just running the fridge. I've never had the need to run the furnace on the road.

I have an on again-off again problem with my trailer brakes. I'm still in the hunt for the source. I can't rule out the connector although it is reading voltage at this time. Next time they go out (I get a warning on the dash), I'll have to pull over and troubleshoot. Sitting in the yard, all brakes energize when Debbie manually operates them in the cab.

Have run into two different issues. First was the wiring in the back of the adapter harness (truck wiring to outlet in bed of truck) was shorting out due to no silicone or epoxy on back of plug connector.
Second issue was corrosion on brake line terminals of trailer plug caused connectors to burn away.
In one case I added a bunch of silicone to the plug. In the other I had to buy and install a new trailer connector cable.
Always something or the other. Just like a house!
