Clear Coat Problem with Front Cap

We own a 2016 3160 RL Legacy Montana. We purchased the unit used this past August. We absolutely love the rig and are heading for the Central California Coast this week to go camping.

When we purchased the rig, I noticed that I there was a small blemish in the clear coat at the top of the front cap. Over the past several months, the blemish has grown and the clear coat is now flaking off along the top ridge of the fiberglass cap. Has anyone else experienced this type of clear coat deterioration? We previously owned a 2013 Crossroads Sunset Trail and its front cap also faded badly. Crossroads failed to use a UV inhibitor in their gel coat and the sun played havoc with the finish on a number of rigs. We had ours re-painted under warranty which solved the sun fading problem.

Since this is similar issue, I thought I’d check to see if anyone else has experienced this problem. The owner of our RV storage yard repairs and re-paints rigs, so I’m going to have him provide me with an estimate when we get back.

Ouch, that happened quickly. I would contact Keystone and request they make right an obvious quality issue. Clear coat that deteriorates in 2-3 years is unheard of. Clear coat from a spray can would have lasted longer. Check the rear cap as well. Good luck.

Our rear cap is perfect. No flaws or issues with the clear coat.

Seeing that you bought your unit used leads me to suspect that the front cap has been repaired and not prepped properly when it was clearcoated.

There doesn’t appear to be any damage to the cap and roof in the area the clear coat is failing. That is not to say that it didn’t happen.

Yesterday, I did send a letter of warranty inquiry to Keystone about the failing clear coat. I’ll let everyone know how they respond.
