Axles

Is there anywhere to find out what axles are suppose to be under my 2007 3000RK? Not saying they are wrong but thought I remembered someone saying they had found this info in print.

The best way to find out what axle ratings that you have on your camper is to crawl under the camper with a flashlight and look at the aluminum tag hanging on each axle. It will tell you the axle weight ratings. Write down the numbers and put them in your camper information package for future reference.

You can go to a CAT (certified automated scale) scale at many truck stops and weigh your camper for $8.50.

Dave,

I was told by Keystone if I had the tag - they were Al-Ko. Dexter does not use the tag (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm almost 100% positive they are Dexter, as that is what Keystone switched to a few years back. To determine the weight rating, it is printed on the tag (drivers side front) as GAWR.

If Dexter axles, it is etched into the axle itself, very legibly. If Alko - then a metal tag hanging off somewhere.

It should be printed on your GVWR tag on the outside of your coach. I remember someone (Glenn) I think, posting a picture that had the axle ratings on it.

My axles had stickers on them with all pertinent data. I pulled one off and put it in my notebook containing the other trailer info.

The tag will work if Keystone put the right axle on the 5er. I would look on the axle.

Dave ...

I called Keystone Customer Service with my VIN and they were able to tell me exactly what axles I have on my Montana. Took about 1 minute and I did not have to crawl in the mud and snow.

ashlandcpa,

Our 2006 3000RK has Dexter 5200 lb. axles. It is etched into the axles like skypilot said, and printed on the GVWR tag like Montana Sky said.

Hey LonnieB.

Any idea why the carrying capacity on the sticker is so different from the brochure.

Not sure, but it probably has something to do with leaving themselves a safety margin.

Dave,
Keystone has started using larger axles on the 2007 Montana's. Many of the larger rigs now have 7,000 lb axles under then instead of the 6,000 lb axles like stated in the brochures.

The brochure says - weight: 10335 carrying capacity: 4095

I would think this means total capacity of 14430.

sticker says - GVWR: 12725 GAWR: 5200
weight of cargo not to exceed: 1707

Is the GVWR suppose to include the carrying capacity? I'm an accountant and gross, to me, means everything. Why wouldn't the carrying capacity in the brochure equal the cargo maximum weight on the sticker? Am I just looking so hard I can't see the trees or what? If anyone can explain, please do. You wont hurt my feelings if you do so in the simplest terms. haha

Don't forget that pin weight is on the truck not the trailer axles, and is not counted in the axle load.

GVWR = weight + carrying capacity

Weight on axles = GVWR - hitch weight

According to the Keystone website, I calculate the GVWR of your coach to be 14,430 lbs and the weight on the axles to be 12,270 (14,430 - 2,160).

If the GVWR is 12,725 lbs. and the carrying capacity is 1,707 lbs, it means your coach weighs 11,018 lbs. The website says your coach weighs 10,335 lbs, a difference of 683 lbs.

It sounds to me that you actually have a 2006 model. It has a weight of 10,210 lbs and a carrying capacity of 2,515 for a GVWR of 12,725 (the weight on your sticker). The hitch weight on the 2006 model is 2,325 lbs. The weight on the axles is thus 12,725 - 2,325 = 10,400 lbs. You have two axles with GAWR of 5,200 lbs, i,e., 10,400 lbs. Right on the money.

The only inconsistency is the difference between the carrying capacity shown on the website for the 2006 (2,515) versus the carrying capacity on your sticker (1,707). My guess is that the sticker on your coach is incorrect (1,707 is totally inconsistent with the carrying capacities of other Montanas) OR something was added to the 2006 3000RK that increased the weight by 800 lbs, thereby reducing the carrying capacity. I would call Keystone for an explanation.

patodonn: Good thinking, the missing weight is the gel coat.

Now Bill, based on your math I am thinking that if the axle weight capacity is 12270, shouldn't the axles be heavier than 5200 each?
Yeah, I know, the new kid just keeps asking questions. haha Thanks for the answers.
