Surge Guards? - Montana Owners Club

Guys I am trying to plan a trip and thinking about a surge guard. CW has a SG34750 Portable on sale for 336.00 PC price. that is the best price I saw. Just wondering what are your thoughts on this one. I have the gen prep and transfer switch and I looked at the hard wired one and it would great to have and not worry about hooking it up each time I set up but I am not sure about doing it myself Bingo even has pics of how to do it but I would hate to hurt Bobby I really do like him.LOL So some thoughts would be great.

Check out rvupgrades.com because they seem to have better prices. Also consider the Progressive Industries Energy Management System. In my opinion, it is superior to Surge Guard. Prices are competitive.

I've been using a surge guard since beginning RVing way back when. I can't count the times it has saved me. I have both the 30-amp and 50-amp units only because when we started out we only had a 30-amp rig. When we bought the Montana I purchased the 50-amp surge guard and now I use both. If I'm on 30-amp power I can use either one. It just takes more adapters when I use the 50-amp rig on a 30-amp source. I like the portability of the units and the price doesn't bother me. Yes, you can get cheaper units for protection against surges, but each one has different characteristics. I like the way the Surge Guard works.

What you oughta do is simply come to the Mid-Atlantic rally in Marion, NC and I am sure between all of us who will be there, we can all help supervise Jim Fischer's installation of a hard-wired protective device of your choice for you.

If you can wait until August, that is??? Just a thought.

I think OZZ has some pictures of the hard wire job he done, if I remember right. I done my own about two or three years ago. Matter of fact, I put one in my stick house at the same time. Have never had to throw either one away yet and the green lites are still on. I think you can get a hard wire for less than CW portable version. Just not as convenient, you might say. All ready to plug in...JB

Thanks guys I am leaning towards the hard wired one it sure would be easyer to not have to hook every time.
Bingo I would love to come don't know yet we are planing that once in a lifetime [atleast for me] trip. Sure would like to see you folks.

We have the portable one. We didn't go for the hardwired one when we purchased our Big Sky because we already had it. But, we think our having the portable one is a good choice because we use Honda generators that have a floating ground which the SurgeGuard would interpret as being poor and subsequently shut down. When we are on generator power, we don't use our SurgeGuard.

OK guys just another thought. I think I will go with the hardwired one. Now the question if you do a 50amp and you are hooked up to 30amp won't the protector shut down because of low voltage? I know that sounds like a stupid question but I really can't think of a good answer!!

The 50 amp model will work on both 30 and 50 amp feeds. No problem!!

It should still be 120v whether 50 or 30 amp. Just lower amperage capacity.

We are trying to identify which SurgeGuard we should get for our new Montana. We do a fair amount of Dry Camping and use a Honda Generator when we need power. Will that effect a Hardwired SurgeGuard? Can you easily turn it on or off or am I better off going with the portable unit? I am new to this and learning a lot from this forum.

If you do go with the "Surge Guard Mod 34750" try Adventure RV Center. I just bought one from them for $303.99 & shiopping $15.05 for a total of $318.04. The shipping cost was to California.

Received my new Surge Guard 34750 yesterday and it is huge, 2 feet long and 4 inches square.

As near as I can tell the Surgeguard 34750 and the Progressive pt50c will do pretty much the same thing, however the pt50c has about double the surge rating 1750 vs 3640. You can't beat Progressives service. We have had ours 8 years and last year when it took a surge I sent it in and it was fixed free.
