Second air conditioner - Montana Owners Club

We have decided to put a second air conditioner on our 3400RL. The bedroom vent already has the wiring so it's just an installation of the unit. To those folks who ordered theirs with the bedroom air conditioner my questions are, 1. What is the brand name (Duo Therm?), 2. What size unti did you get, 13,500BTU? Our thermostat is Duo Therm and has the option for a second zone. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.......Pete

I had the Dometic 13,500 BTU Penguin Low-profile installed in my bedroom last year. The performance has been outstanding! Temps last summer were 110 outside and a cool 71 inside the coach with both a/c units running.

Our Cambridge came with the Low-pro Duo Therm 13,500, and the main unit is also Duo Therm 15,000. When both are running they do a fine job. The main unit is duct in the attic, it seems to put more air in the bedroom area, other Cambridge owners have to us the same. Will probably close off half the vents in the BR area this summer. However I agree you need the second A/C for a back up unit. GBY...

I just received today my brand new 13,500 BTU Carrier Low-Profile (7.5 inches high) with heat strip from Family RV Parts Store. Look them up on eBay. Cost of the air condition was $569.99 plus $85.00 shipping and $49.00 for the upgrade heat strip with free delivery. Looking to have it installed soon.

How can you tell if your unit is wired for the second ac unit?

I have a regular size Duo-Therm Brisk Air, which was installed at Keystone when they built it. I have used it mainly with the fan option or the heat option. I did use it a few time with A/C option and it surely cools down the bedroom. As you know heat rises so if it's HOT outside your bedroom will be very hot and stuff, but with that 2nd A/C you can really tell a difference. I don't even think it should be an option in any of these units if you're using your unit in the summer it can alway be useful to have it. I've used mine alone without the main A/C on and it does work very well in the bedroom especially when you're trying to sleep on a hot stick humid night. Also, to operate the 2nd A/C it is all manual (turn knobs), Fan, Heat Strip, and A/C Options at "high, medium and low". Good Luck to ya!

We had a 2nd 13,500 Carrier installed when we purchased the Monty from the dealer. It does an outstanding job cooling the front half of the trailer. We have camped in 100+ heat with humidity thick enough you could cut it with a knife. With both units on it stays very comfortable inside, even with our running in and out occasionally. I think 5'ers of this size need 2 A/C's if you are going to be camping in warmer climates a lot.

Our factory bedroom AC was the Brisk-Air, and I believe it's a 1,500 as well. They did not tie it in to the thermostat.

If I was buying my own, I would install the low profile to reduce clearance. My full height AC puts me at 13' 3".

I would be real curious if you could tie it in as a zone on the thermostat. Sounds like it would be tough as there is no control wiring extending to the front from the thermostat. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks everyone for your responses and information. It will be a low profile 13,500BTU for us, I will order it and have Jeff at Suncoast RV install it when we go back for our roof inspection. You can always count on great information and advice from the MOC folks.....Pete
Change #1, I guess I'll be getting it through Campers World in Kissimmee, $300.00 cheaper installed and complete.

I am also at 13'3" and I have the low profile a/c up front. I had the Maxxair covers installed on all my vents and the highest point is the FF vent cover in the kitchen. Welcome to the 13'+ club!! =)

Okie Guy,
If you have an outlet box adjacent to your bedroom vent, probably has a blank cover over it, you are wired. If you don't then it is likely you do not have the framing for a second AC either.

I'm going to guess that you probably have 30 amp service also. If so, I would think that would indicate no wiring for second a/c. I was told our unit was wired for the second a/c but I have never visually checked it. Basically, I don't believe too much rv dealers or manufacturers tell me any more. We don't have the outlet box either, but I wouldn't think that would be a necessity for the wiring to be in the ceiling.
